I bought the book "US Marine Corps and RAAF Hornet Units of OIF" of the Osprey Combat Aircraft series (No. 56).

There are many abbreviations in the book - like in other military aviation books. :D My problem is, there is no appendix for the abbreviations and I hate to read abbreviations, which I don't know. :(

Maybe anyone could help me:

VMFA

VMFA(AW)

CV

CVW (I read in another book "carrier wing", but what's the V in CVW?)

CVN (= "carrier", but what mean the abbreviation exactly?)

kind regards,

Fire

V is for "fixed wing squadron"

M is for "Marine" i.e. USMC

F is for "fighter"

A is for "attack"

VMFA if Marine Corps Fighter Attack Squadron

The AW means "all weather"

CV is a carrier, as mentioned. CVN is a nuclear powered carrier.

CVW is a Carrier Air Wing.

Semantics, but for interests sake the C actually stands for "cruiser" and the origin of using V for heavier-than-air craft is from the Latin word Volo (to fly).

In effect CVN stands for Cruiser, Aviation, Nuclear.
