Malleus Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 Hi! 1. If I have external drop tanks, I connect it to the fuel system by just switching the appropriate boost pump switch when I switch the other boost pump switches? Or is there something else? 2. The first training mission ends when the plane is powered up, and the next one starts when you're on the runway. I'm having trouble with what's happening between. :) So I ask for taxi clearance and the ATC tells me to taxi to runway X. So, uh, do I taxi to the runway, stop at the red sign, and ask for takeoff there, or do I roll out and line up on the runway and ask for takeoff there? I tried just rolling out and lining up but the ATC kept repeating "cannot clear for takeoff" or something and when I ask at the red sign, nothing happens. I haven't tried it too many times, but so far it was kinda random if it worked or not. 3. What's the supposed landing distance (or whatever it is called) for the A-10? I've been practicing landing at Novorossiysk airport, and its runway is just barely long enough. I touch down right at the edge of runway at 135 knots and with full wheel- and airbrakes I can still just barely stop at the end. 5,9km is barely enough or am I doing something wrong?
bradleyjs Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 (edited) You should go to the "Hold Short" line [which is adjacent to the runway] which is 2 solid lines and 2 dashed (colored Yellow) lines and call and wait for clearance to T/O... I haven't tested this in the last few releases - been too busy with work to spend any significant amount of time to really play it... I'm sure that's where you want to be located in order to "trigger" the tower clearance. Look here for an example of what I'm talking about -- http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.askacfi.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/hold-short-line.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.askacfi.com/136/enhanced-taxiway-centerline.htm&h=283&w=448&sz=53&tbnid=qd-SbTisULBSrM:&tbnh=80&tbnw=127&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dhold%2Bshort%2Bline%2Bat%2Bthe%2Brunway%2Bpic%26tbm%3Disch%26tbo%3Du&zoom=1&q=hold+short+line+at+the+runway+pic&usg=__2jPeDpkQYmxTs8uxleMqt5Y9X5o=&sa=X&ei=xm2nTfHvEqSD0QGp4-n5CA&ved=0CBoQ9QEwAQ Edited April 14, 2011 by bradleyjs Alienware Area 51 R5 - Intel i9 7980XE (4.7 GHz), 32GB Dual Channel HyperX DDR4 XMP, Dual NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Graphics 11GB GDDR5X SLI, 4.5 TB combo of SSDs/HDDs, Alienware 1500 Watt Multi-GPU Power Supply, Alienware 25” 240Hz Gaming Monitor, Alienware Pro Gaming Keyboard, TM HOTAS, TM Cougar F-16C MFDs, Saitek Pro Flight Rudder Pedals, TrackIR5, Win10 Pro x64
636_Castle Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 1) They can be switched on at any time. Both the left and right AC generators need to be online in order for them to pressurize with bleed air though, so they won't start operating until your engines are fully running. 2) You hold short and then call the tower. If you don't get a response and you're sure you're on the right radio, you probably aren't close enough to the runway to trigger takeoff clearance. 3) Anywhere from 0 to 9000 feet. aaron886 Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 3) Anywhere from 0 to 9000 feet. Good answers, but I laughed... how does one land in 0 feet? I think that's called "crashing." :megalol:

Malleus Posted April 15, 2011 Author Posted April 15, 2011 3) Anywhere from 0 to 9000 feet. Are you referring to this? Hmm, according to that, 6km should be more than enough. Strange. Anyway thanks for the responses, everyone.:)
nomdeplume Posted April 15, 2011 Posted April 15, 2011 I've never landed at Novorossiysk so maybe it's an ultra short runway or something, but I've never had any problems stopping unless I really messed up the landing or my plane is half broken. Maybe try Senaki or Gudauta? I use both of them a fair bit and have no issues. It's possible (though I think unlikely) there might be something wrong with the traction at Novorossiysk- so it's probably a good idea to try a few different places. Would be good to at least rule that out.

If you're using rudder pedals make sure you have the brake axis inverted or you may not actually be applying brakes. I played with some controller settings and forgot to change this again and it took me a bit to figure out why I couldn't get enough speed to take-off (toe-brakes were on).
Zomba Posted April 15, 2011 Posted April 15, 2011 1. The external tanks use bleed air to slightly pressurize themselves when you are flying. Your engines still take fuel from the internal tanks. What fuel they consume is replaced with fuel from the external tanks due to the bleed air pressure in them forcing fuel to the lower pressure internal tanks. All you have to do is ensure the tank is selected on the fuel panel. All other pumps that you associate with the internal tanks have to remain on as well as these are your primary feed pumps to the engines regardless of where the fuel ultimatly comes from. Think of the internal tanks as the Mob, everything must pass through their hands before it gets to you. The flow rate is as slow as economic recovery. Just set up a mission with external tanks and 10% internal fuel and watch how fast the fuel transfers to the internals. Hardly exciting. I don't test for bugs, but when I do I do it in production.

Would be good to at least rule that out. Novorossiyk (along with Gelendzhik) has the shortest runway in the game area. They behave the same way, so it's not the problem with the Novorossiyk runway. By the way, I think I got the hang of it. I set up a scenario for myself, with rainy weather and a fully loaded A-10, and when I touch down with a speed of 120 knots, I can manage to stop the plane after 4-5 kms. Still looks long compared to what that chart suggests, but at least enough for the shortest runway in the game in bad weather and loaded plane. (Well, the shortest marked runway, that is ... there are three regional airports with ~3km runways).
