Gunja Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 (edited) I've been looking for server to rent, but none of the gaming server companies i found host FC2. :( If anyone knows a place where i could rent one, please share the link. 10 mbps upload would be more than enough for my needs. I know that squads rent entire dedicated servers and that way they can install and host what ever they choose. I can not afford that option at the moment. I can afford 20-30 $ per month and i wouldnt mind buying a copy of FC2 for the server installation if needed. It's a long shot, but i had to ask. Thank You. Edited May 23, 2011 by Gunja
Sov13t Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 Hello Gunja, Due to the nature of FC2's server software (the lack of) the dedicated servers you see today in the lobby are actually full blown clients running on dedicated machines. In order to rent such a machine, you basically need a colo or full dedicated windows based server with a capable 3D processor. Some squadrons sent their fully assembled servers to a data center and then pay the fees, but they are no where near the $30-40 you are looking at, more around $100-150 range. Hope this helps. TAIPAN_ Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 We host a dedicated box for Rise of Flight, with Hypernia. It's $160 per month, and we get quad core cpu, 100mbit bandwidth etc. However, we split the bill between guys in the squad and donations. It's not a cheap undertaking so it's best to band together with some friends who want to host the same sort of missions and form a squad. Gunja Posted June 2, 2011 Author Posted June 2, 2011 I wonder... if ED rented a bunch of dedi boxes, made game servers and sub-let them to the community charging per slot. iRacing lets you pay and open a server just for one race or a day. This method would be ideal for people flying with their friends maybe once a week. Let's say ED makes a server with the password. Client pays for one day and get's the password. Now he can admin this server for xx hours untill the server is reset and password is changed. In that time he can remove the pass and make it public or share that pass with his friends. Might not be a big profit for them, maybe just to cover the costs but i think it would be a good thing for FC & DCS. I'm sure it couldnt be bad for this sim if ED did something to help out in this area.
