Pyroflash Posted May 25, 2011 Posted May 25, 2011 (edited) So, I have had this question for a while now, but the world is mostly aware of only two different forms of radio transmission, AM and FM. There is however, a third, PM or Phase Modulation, that people are mostly unaware of. My question is why phase modulation is never used in most radio equipment? I understand it is a bit more complex, but it isn't rocket science, and it seems like there is no really good reason why PM radios don't exist in the mainstream. AlphaOneSix Posted May 25, 2011 Posted May 25, 2011 You answered your own question. It's more complex. Which makes it more expensive. If it offered some significant benefit over FM, that cost may be justified. But it doesn't. The world is flooded with FM equipment, which represents a HUGE investment in FM technology, so too bad for PM, I don't think it will ever make it into mainstream radio usage.
Pyroflash Posted May 25, 2011 Author Posted May 25, 2011 Maybe one day when radio frequencies become so used that frequency modulation is no longer possible, but I am sure human kind will adapt if that situation ever arises. Just like the whole IPv6 thing. I really didn't think that the whole reason was it was too complex, ironically that seems too... simple an answer. Oh well, at any rate, thanks for taking the time to answer my question. If you aim for the sky, you will never hit the ground.
