hassata Posted June 13, 2011 Posted June 13, 2011 I'm on e8400 @ 4.0. Would a 6970 be worth the extra cost over a 6950 in terms of FPS. My res is approx 2000 by 1600. I may go to approx 4000 by 1600. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Delectronics&field-keywords=hd+6970&x=0&y=0 http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Delectronics&field-keywords=hd+6970&x=0&y=0#/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Delectronics&field-keywords=hd+6950&rh=n%3A172282%2Ck%3Ahd+6950 Any advice as to what looks goo above if price is the top consideration (2gb of course). Many thanks [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Rahvin Posted June 13, 2011 Posted June 13, 2011 Don't discount nVidia either, most of the time some games run faster on a less powerful card, simply by being optimized for the platform. Sadly, I have not yet seen anyone categorically benchmarking cards with the DCS engine... My suggestion for you: The Powercolor 6950 PCS++ which is basically a 6970, for 30 dollars/euros less, and a decent custom cooler to boot. (If you can still find one)
miguelaco Posted June 13, 2011 Posted June 13, 2011 Agree with post above. Consider a GTX 560ti since DCS crearly favors nVidia GPUs. You will get the same performance or even better. Also 69xx users are experiencing annoying graphic glitches like white flashing boxes and sun flickering with HDR enabled. Thus I wouldn't consider AMD/ATI right now. Obviously, this thoughts are centered around use with ED's software which I care. Dunno about other games or purpose.
hassata Posted June 13, 2011 Author Posted June 13, 2011 (edited) I'm on a 4750x2 and it's served me well. I'm going with ATI because I'm running 4 monitors. NOTE: No need for more replies--purchase delayed for now :( Edited June 13, 2011 by hassata [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Kirin Posted June 16, 2011 Posted June 16, 2011 (edited) ...Consider a GTX 560ti since DCS crearly favors nVidia GPUs. You will get the same performance or even better... Hmm, do you have any source for such claim? I am a happy Ati customer at the moment. I am running an Asus 6950 with 6970 BIOS (which means more shaders) @ 6970 speeds. With my rig (i5 750 @ 4.2Ghz o/c) the performance is very satisfactory. It's true that I suffer the white spots. But word goes that the new Catalyst 11.6 cure it. (will test tonite) At the current price-tag the Radeo HD6xxx series is unbeatable. And of course eyefinity is hard to replace if you wanna run multimonitor. I wouldn't know how to export 2 MFDs on a GTX without the need of a secondary graphic card or such. Edited June 16, 2011 by Kirin adding more argument
miguelaco Posted June 16, 2011 Posted June 16, 2011 I have had both cards installed in my PC. While framerates are roughly the same, nVidia's numbers are more stable and gameplay is definitely smoother. This is with my 6950 unlocked as yours. Also, check this thread. Don't want to start another nVidia vs ATI war, but as you can see nVidia seems to be the best option for DCS titles. http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=70906

That issue is now resolved with the latest Catalyst 11.6 driver :)
Kirin Posted June 16, 2011 Posted June 16, 2011 Thanks for the link. Interesting read at least but not a conclusive analysis of the 'Ati problem' - if there is one. I think both competitors use 'cheats' to achieve higher benchmarking scores. How this affects DCS I do not know - but the answer of the 'techie' seems disheartening although the explanation is vague. As for my experience I am happy with what I got. Great performance at a very good price. And no intention to start a war what-so-ever. (besides the war against Apple :) )
