razorseal Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 I started the campaign and 1st mission was a CAS mission... I'm just having a real tough time finding enemy objects to destroy... I'll start looking for targets by slewing the TGP, but can't find anything... then IF I find something, I'm afraid it might be a friendly... usually while searching for targets with the TGP, I'll start not flying a straight line ( I guess I should use AP when I do that) and then eventually I'll get pinged by the SAMs and AAA and next thing you know, i'm trying to avoid missiles and flak, and I haven't even found a target yet... right now, I send my wingman in to take care of the targets because when I tell him to engage targets, he finds them immediately.... any suggestions or help with this?
Napa Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 Try to contact a JTAC. The radio frequency of jtac should be in the briefing, and he'll give you the position of the targets of interest. Set up a waypoint or a markpoint in that area and keep your distance from enemy AAA and SAM defences. Use your wingman once you have identified the enemy position and heading. Check out videos from Matt Wagner on how to properly use your flight. GGTharos Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 1. Know where to look for enemies. You have a briefing and map - study them. 2. Establish an orbit or track in safe airspace so that you can conduct your search. 3. Quit staring at the instruments. Your search should be a quick glance at the MPCD while you aviate. Get your head out of the cockpit. 4. Be patient. 5. Use the JTAC 2 and 3 are things will get you killed if you do not do them. any suggestions or help with this? razorseal Posted July 25, 2011 Author Posted July 25, 2011 when jtac gives me the coordinates, I can see them in the MSG on the MPCD, right? well is there any 'easy' way of marking these points given to me? if not, how do I enter them as a 'POI' on the map? you can point me in the right direction on the manual if there is no easy way of explaining it, or a yt vid would be nice if there was one (eta - found this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mcJ8mlMF7qg)
electricsoldier Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 (edited) Check here: http://en.wiki.eagle.ru/wiki/DCS:_A10C_Training_Supplements You will find 3 really good JTAC guides under (drum roll...) Guides :smilewink: And there's these 4 videos: http://www.youtube.com/user/SpareTimePilot?feature=mhum#p/c/24181A658668FAC0 Otherwise GGTharos is right, stay clear of target area whilst looking for targets, use AP on set Altitude, with a fair bank... This will keep you going in circles whilst you look for targets. Check RWR for potential hazards. If you miss JTAC info you can always re-request it... Nu-NRG Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 (edited) 3. Quit staring at the instruments. Your search should be a quick glance at the MPCD while you aviate. Get your head out of the cockpit. Might sound direct, cruel, etc but damn it's the truth! You are bound to overlook something (or not fully utilize) when you over-focus on single point. Tho applies to fighter jets but they say .. One peek is worth a thousand [radar] sweeps. Unknown Tho I haven't progressed in to campaigns yet, but I did play some single player missions and I read the briefing carefully and thoroughly. I even made notes of my assets (JTAC, Tankers, SEAD, /others/ frequency and a mental note of what and WHEN can they help me). Make notes (mental or otherwise) on: threats - what they are and what they mean for your and your mission progression (their envelopes, if you can by some way eliminate it, or just get around it) way points - are they 100% safe, if you stick to them you are OK, what happens if you deviate, fly low and high, in short - theater objective - follow the way points, establish the orbit, find targets, identify, rely on / call in your assets. Objective is always to achieve the mission goals, !but!, you can't do that when you are dead. Which leads to (starts off): 2. Establish an orbit or track in safe airspace so that you can conduct your search. 4. Be patient. Sometimes I catch my self doing things in A-10 fast and it does not yield a good results. When ever *I catch my self* trying to do things fast, I always pull my self back and stand off immediately. But sometimes it's just too late. I did notice, when you take things slow it's way better. Which would lead to: Where fighters are jaguars that chase down their prey and hamstring them, the A-10 is a Nile Croc. It won't chase you down, but God help you if it decides to slowly stalk you.
