Aye Kartug, there's a lot of cases where you can get sudden popups even with the relatively simple AI that governs SAMs - the classic would be to fly along happily without much contacts happening only to suddenly get locked from VERY close and simply not have a chance unless there's terrain masking available. Just because the SAM site was busy looking at your wingman for a while... :P

During testing me and a couple of the other testers had some fun with In The Weeds mission - it always devolves into "let's try to kill those BuKs instead of doing our mission"... And i've often had to dive for a hill because I came in too close while the BuK was trying to attack someone else. Then that "someone else" either gets nailed or (more commonly) gets in behind a hill and the BuK starts searching again and says "ooooooh, what have we here? Nom nom nom" and starts teaching me a lesson. :)

The things is, finding ground units from the air is hard, things like targetting pods help but it's still not easy if you don't know where to look. It's the whole reason JTAC/AFACs are in existance.

It's true. A well camo'ed dug in unit, is going to be hard to spot at 10,000. Use the map, use the steer points, use TAD, use labels if you must ( I modified mine to only to be black specs that show up around 3000 meters and then disappear as I close on them). Hey we still don't have 4K 3D displays yet so we need a crutch.

If all else fails there one shure way to find your targets. Offer your wingman up as Bait and watch his six.
