Runibl Posted August 31, 2011 Posted August 31, 2011 (edited) About to complete final upgrade step for my system, and i would love some feedback if possible. Choices i have settled on for now at least are: CPU: Intel Core i7 2600K Sandy Bridge Mobo: ASUS P8Z68-V PRO RAM: G.Skill 8GB DDR3 1600MHz (2x4) (F3-12800CL9D-8GBXL) Cooler: Zalman CNPS 9900MAX This will go together with my earlier purchases which are: GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 580 (1.5 GB) PSU: Corsair Professional Series Gold AX750 I'm a bit rusty in this area, but i believe these should be compatible. Any input from the tech savvy people here? Main concern is mobo and ram which i don't know to much about, but chose because people seem to think they are good. P.S. Have no plans of overclocking. But might look into it in the future at some point, maybe. Edited August 31, 2011 by Runibl Runi. EtherealN Posted August 31, 2011 Posted August 31, 2011 Might want to check the RAM - the vendor should have a compatibility list. However, unfortunately many RAM vendors are extremely slow about updating the lists so it mgiht well be that it is compatible even if it's not on a list of supported mobos. It probably works, but checking compatibility charts might be worth it just to be safe. (Though should be available on ASUS and G.Skill websites.) Runibl Posted August 31, 2011 Author Posted August 31, 2011 Good tip, knew there was something i forgot to do..... It's been a while since i did this :) Did a check and G.Skill website has that mobo on it's Qualified Motherboards List. And although that exact ram is not mentioned on ASUS site, a similar model is. Also made a generic search for user experiences, and people do say it fits together. Runi. EtherealN Posted August 31, 2011 Posted August 31, 2011 You should be golden then. :) You'll certainly like the rig you've got designed there. As you can see, it's fairly similar to what I'm running and it really is awesome kit. The only idea I would have is that if money is an item, you might consider downgrading to i5 2500K. You'll get virtually the same gaming performance as an i7 2600K since the only difference is no hyperthreading and 2MB less cache, which are things I'm not really worried about for games in general. 0.1GHz lower clock speed as well, but with a motherboard like that one, you shouldn't have an issue pumping that thing up really high anyway. (My ASUS board was a one-click OC affair, it literally does it for you, as long as the cooler is up to scraps.) However, if you consider OCing, I might suggest going for the AX850 instead, to ensure your wattage lands roughly at 50% of PSU capacity (which is where it's the most efficient for your electricity bill). Though on the other hand, I'm not convinced that the difference is worth the price difference. Maybe, maybe not. Madman777 Posted August 31, 2011 Posted August 31, 2011 Sandy bridge doesn't seem to like RAM @ 1.65v. I had it , and I had some issues with it. Changed to 1.5v RAM and works perfect. I'd build some something similar but with the i5 k because I don't really use my computer for anything other than gaming. (I used to render in 3DsMax when I did freelance animation but that came to an end.) When you build it and play DCS post something back here saying how much of an improvement it was! Runibl Posted August 31, 2011 Author Posted August 31, 2011 (edited) EtherealNThink i will stick with I7 2600K, since it's within budget and that's the one I've been having my eyes on for a while. Was thinking about the 750w vs 850w at an earlier time, and came to the decision of not needing to overclock for the time being, and the fact the 850 was unavailable at the time. So i went with the 750w. But should be easy to upgrade that part at a later time. Thanks for that input. Madman777Yeah i think i read something about that, and made sure i included that in my search for RAM as well. The ones i have picked are 1.5v so that should work fine. KaspeR32I noticed a huge amount of improvement, by just upgrading the GPU from Gefore 8800 to GTX 580. And at the same time going to 64bit win7 helped a lot. So this should hopefully show a huge different as well. I'm actually ordering from Denmark, since it's nice and close and easy to ship to Faroe Islands from there. If interested the site is: www.proshop.dk (Only in Danish and Swedish though i think). Edited August 31, 2011 by Runibl Runi. Closest I've gotten so far was a refueling stop when I did a round-the-world flight with a Baron in FSX. :D That was one of the sites i checked when searching for a place to buy. But does not ship to Faroe Islands sadly. It's kinda weird actually. Faroe Islands and Greenland are a part of the Danish kingdom, and yet most shops seem to not want to ship there. I can actually sometimes find a shop easier in UK or USA that will send over here, except from electronic stuff. So it took me a while to find, but Proshop was one :) If you ever do get over here, you should visit :) Runi. EtherealN Posted September 1, 2011 Posted September 1, 2011 It all really depends a lot on the setup - the important thing isn't really 1.65V itself, it's the voltage delta between core and memory which Intel cautions should not be over 0.5V. So for once overclocking the CPU actually decreases the risk for problems. :) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Daniel "EtherealN" Agorander | Даниэль "эфирныйн" Агорандер Intel i7 2600K @ 4.4GHz, ASUS Sabertooth P67, 8GB Corsair Vengeance @ 1600MHz, ASUS GTX 560Ti DirectCU II 1GB, Samsung 830series 512GB SSD, Corsair AX850w, two BENQ screens and TM HOTAS Warthog DCS: A-10C Warthog FAQ | DCS: P-51D FAQ | Remember to read the Forum Rules | | | Life of a Game Tester
