dooom Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 I am interested in a server colocation but wanted to ask if anyone here is using a 1U or 2U rack case for their dedi... I understand that both FC2 and the DCS series require a dedicated gfx card and a seperate game key but has anyone fit a GFX decent enough for these titles into a rack for colocation services? PoleCat Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 We are using a 4U rack case at the facility. I think you can get low profile graphics adapters for the 2U but I doubt 1U although I am not certain. At any rate as long as you are only serving the game a powerful graphics card is not needed. A modest one should be more than adequate for the job as long as at meets the minimum req. Best of Luck. Out http://www.104thphoenix.com/
dooom Posted October 24, 2011 Author Posted October 24, 2011 Are you with the 104th Polecat? Would you mind if i asked what your server specs are? PoleCat Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 (edited) Yes I am one of the two Wing commanders of the 104th Phoenix. Specs are modest but sufficient for our needs. We will be replacing this server with a new one as soon as there is a good reason to do so. The Server has been in use and colocated since 2007. This server is used primarily for FC2 but is also be able to host A10-C when needed. We do have another dedicated server for A10-C. That box is overkill for the task. i7 875K, 8GB DDR3 1600, GTX 570 etc. Just let us know if we can be of any assistance. dooom Posted October 25, 2011 Author Posted October 25, 2011 we are looking at quad core so other titles like ROF and IL2 could also be run on it.... that E6600 is a good chipset though; pretty good workhorse. what server farm do you use and whats your monthly fee? I have seen some requiring payment on data transfer rates which I am uncomfortable with. Sleem Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 1u is certainly possible! Supermicro do some great servers
Rhinox Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 I tested Supermicro 815/1U when building my server, but I would not recommend it for FC/DCS or any other application where dedicated gfx-card is required. Apart from being expensive as hell it was nearly impossible to guarantee sufficient cooling even for very modest gfx-card (as it is for every 19"/1U). If you are not limited with space, use at least 2U-case instead. More space for drives/fans, better cooling, and you can use virtually any stock standard-size components (even dual-slot monsters like HD6990/GTX590 with riser-card, though I think it is overkill, I'm using low-profile HD6570). Many colo-centers charge you more for bigger cases, so I think 2U is quite a good compromise...
