Hi,

I am new to this forum and first I want to say hello to everybody and thanks for looking.

But I hope somebody might be able to help me or has the same problems.

I bought a new XFX HD6870 and I hoped it would run Blackshark better as my HD 4650 but it seems to run the same.

My FPS during flight are usally between 15 to 25 and with some action arround as low as 10.

I am wondering what drivers you are using at the moment to get the best performance. I tried 11.9 and 11.10 preview 2 and 3 (both previews end up with a white screen error) I am at the moment running 11.6 but as I am saying I am not happy with the FPS.

I am running a Windows 7 64bit with an AMD Phantom X3 processor and 4GB ram.

Any ideas are much appreciated as I don't know what to do anymore and I hope I haven't spent the money for naught.

Thanks Progo

A computer is a synergistic mesh of components. Upgrading can be a tricky process.

I don't think its the drivers limiting your performance, I could be wrong but I doubt it.

A DXDiag would be great.

The engine of DCS is CPU-limited!

Even if this quote of EtherealN is regarding DCS-A10 it hit the nail on it's head, and this is also true for BlackShark

"Can only get 60FPS"... ... ...

You know, that's pretty good. wink.gif

(Though if I dump graphics settings on my 560 I can get 120+ on stock speed, but I want some view range too.)

Remember: both graphics and simulation engine both run in "frames", if the simulation engine is overtasked (too much units and triggers, for example), it will send information to the graphics engine less often. In this case, you could run 2000 GTX 580's in parallell and it wouldn't help you.

Generally speaking, 60 FPS is fine. If you experience problems with "smoothness" (I interpret this to mean microstutter, but you are being a bit ambigious), you can oen graphics.cfg and change the MaxFPS variable to something lower - maybe 40. The human brain reacts a lot sharper to changes in FPS than actual FPS itself. A human will typically feel a steady 30 FPS to be smoother than something that varies between 40 and 60 FPS.

Basically, be careful about thinking FPS is solely a graphics card issue. In the case of this product, it's usually a lot more complex than that. (Though with a 2600 you probably could increase FPS with s SLI configuration, but why would you want to? Unless you are using a 3D display monitor your screen will be running at 60Hertz, so you'd only be able to use your added horsepower in extreme circumstances like SuperSampling or triple-screen landscape setups.)

So if your CPU is not the weak spot in your system (but it looks like it is...) please tell what other components (is running other software in the background?/switch anti-virus of while in simulation...)you are using and the setting you run BlackShark - until this we can only guess.

But I'm very sure that ithe drivers of your GPU are not the problem.

And welcome aboard!

Hi,

Thanks for the replys. I attached a DXDiag output.

I am running Freetrack, Tuneup and Avast Antivirus (which I will now turn off) Tuneup as well? It has a so called Turbo mode but to be honest I never really recognized any difference.

I have tried all settings in Blackshark, low and high and it is almost the same, which confirms your statement that the CPU is the weakpoint and not the GPU. I thought it would be the driver, for this reason.

But it makes sence as under normal flying the FPS is fine with everything high but when I play the "battle" mission or "Georgian War" Campaign than the FPS drops significantly.

Cheers.

Looked through your DXdiag - nothing suspicious found...

Looks like (we all already said) the Processor is the weak spot.

But before you run in the next shop - here is a advice:...wait a little for the DCS-BlackShark compatibility patch(...what is "little"?! --- Don't know...;) ) and see how BlackShark behaves with the updated engine.

The engine will be native 64bit and can take advantage of multi threading on two cores. (The same that is on DCS-A10 in use)

This can give you a little more FPS - so that you have a little more time to plan a major upgrade.
