Hi all!

I was just wondering why Helios seems to be so popular. To my mind, having a touch-screen as a second, vertically-lower, extended monitor would be better, using the TrackIR view of the cockpit.

Interested in your thoughts.

Having flown with TIR, with and without Helios, though without a touch screen; it seems to me that it will be faster/easier, not to mention more immersive to use the touch screen.

Your hand goes to where your eye is looking as opposed to having to guide the mouse cursor. That does not even take into account that Helios can make the side console switches more accesible or the issues of adjusting your head to get the right POV, maybe even pausing TIR, to set the ILS freq, for example.

Without a touch screen you aren't using Helios to its full potential, though, so the comparison would be a bit unbalanced in that situation.

All, IMHO, of course. Your mileage may vary.;)

EDIT: Having reread your post...missed the part where you wanted to use a touchscreen but no Helios.

I don't recall anyone discussing it but I suspect there would be some issues with the way TIR was moving the targets and Windows trying to keep track of what/where you were 'clicking'.

Of course, for some that are using multiple screens in an semi-realistic configuration, then you have a glass cockpit and it is definately better because then only the world moves not the pit.

OK, reading your post, knowing it was initially confusing I think you are asking if it would be better to have two screens, the bottom a touch screen and use tir to pan around and touch the controls.

That would in no way be better than using helios, a few advantages I can think of right away.

1. I often glance my eyes down to the touch screen without moving my head so I maintain better SA as my main view is not dancing about.

2. the helios pit is much better for clicking on the items. You will touch the right one every time as they are at the correct angle and you are not trying to keep your TIR from moving about as you reach forward.

3. Helios is not just about buttons and touching stuff, it has all your gauges in front of you. I guess this is tied in with point 1.

4. helios can add stuff to your pit like pop ups for charts etc.

5. It just is better :)
