Ah, ok... I just figured there'd be a different one for the -C, with all the avionics changes. I guess aerodynamically it's machs nichts (yeah, I probably butchered the spelling, oh well)

That document is still applicable to just about anything airframe related, yes :)

Ah, this thread is looking better. Nice. Well done, I edited my post as well.

Clean is used to denote gear and flaps up, but I have seen it used to mean "without stores" as well. I used it in the first sense, which is obvious from context only if you have the right background I guess. I should have been more careful with the terminology. Apologies for the ambiguity.

Oh, I didn't even think of that; I was just thinking externals.

As it happens, I flew the mission the first couple times *almost* clean *edit* (I mean stores wise... though I suppose flaps and gear too, with the exception of the VERY first go)*end edit* ; just ECM, TGP, and AIM-9s.

I threw on a couple 4-packs of Mavericks to try to make things a bit more challenging as I got more proficient, but in retrospect, I think the additional drag actually made things easier; it makes the throttle seem a bit more responsive when you have to drop power. Or it could just be me, dunno?

Effte and all:

For whatever hurt feeling there may be, I apologize. I'm sorry that you feel I was trying to character snipe, but from where I sat, the comments were infuriatingly patronizing, and I honestly believed they were being made with the specific purpose of redirecting blame onto my alleged incompetence for failing to do something I had already said I had already done. I very much did not get the impression that they were said in an attempt to be helpful. I seem to have been incorrect in that impression, and apologize for losing my cool.

My apologies as well. With my reply to the original message I never wanted to sound rude or something. Sorry, if you felt that way.

For terminology's sake,

'cleaning up' or 'dirtying up' refers to operating the gear, glaps, spoilers, etc.

Clean configuration means no stores (that means no pods either), not even pylons - though to be sure you have to see how the -1 for your specific plane defines 'clean' (they may give a drag index, which you can look up and may correspond to a plane without pylons).

"Clean configuration" has a clear and unambigious meaning in all kinds of aviation where we're not engaged in delivering unwanted cargo without landing - gear and flaps up.

clean, a. Of landing gear, flaps, etc.: In a retracted position, as in 'the brakes are in a clean position.'

Colloq.

However,

clean aircraft. 1.An aircraft in flight configuration, versus landing configuration, i.e., landing gear and flaps retracted, etc. 2. An aircraft that does not have external stores.

And if we are to get specific:

Stall warning is provided in the clean configuration (landing gear up and flap switch not in DN position) by an audible 600 Hz chopped tone.

The dash one goes on to talk about "clean + 11 pylons" for best glide (obviously using Tharos' definition above). In the stores configuration charts, 'clean' is defined as 'pylon removed'. Under adverse weather ops, it's back to using clean to mean "no flaps". Under stores drag, we have "Baseline aircraft is clean with 11 pylons installed". Under definitions on external stores, 'clean' is not an included alternative.

I can see where it gets confusing... :D

(And then we have not even mentioned the "clean aircraft concept" from winter ops yet... muahaha!)

Edit: I also added my AAR A/S references in my earlier post, as promised.
