Flogger23m Posted January 29, 2012 Posted January 29, 2012 I am thinking of buying DCS Black Shark on Steam as it is on sale. I am wondering if I can use my Steam CD key to download the game from ED's website and forgo the use of Steam for running the game? And does the BS install merge with my FC2 install?
Nate--IRL-- Posted January 29, 2012 Posted January 29, 2012 Yes you can do that. However It doesn't Merge with FC2 - it must be installed in a separate folder. Nate Ka-50 AutoPilot/stabilisation system description and operation by IvanK- Essential Reading

Nate--IRL-- Posted January 29, 2012 Posted January 29, 2012 (edited) AFAIK yes. However should you run out - simply open support ticket with ED to have them replenished. EDIT:- Actually I'm not so sure - I seem to remember a difference, so I may be wrong about the ability to download from ED too. I'll ask.. drachehexe Posted January 29, 2012 Posted January 29, 2012 While you're at it, is the Steam version upgradeable to version 2?
Nate--IRL-- Posted January 29, 2012 Posted January 29, 2012 While you're at it, is the Steam version upgradeable to version 2? Yes - The steam version of BS1 must be flown once - then the BS2 upgrade version can be installed. BS2 will install to a separate folder outside steam. EtherealN Posted January 29, 2012 Posted January 29, 2012 (edited) As far as I recall, the following are both true: 1) Steam version of BS1 is okey for use with Upgrade version of BS2. 2) Steam version of A-10C gives a code that is useable with downloads from ED. However, since Steam version of BS1 uses Steam DRM and not SF, it does not give a key that is recognized by other versions of BS1. So you cannot use it with BS1 downloaded from ED. I'll try to double-check this though. EDIT: Obviously though, if your intent is to play BS2, this doesn't matter much. :) Edited January 29, 2012 by EtherealN [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Daniel "EtherealN" Agorander | Даниэль "эфирныйн" Агорандер Intel i7 2600K @ 4.4GHz, ASUS Sabertooth P67, 8GB Corsair Vengeance @ 1600MHz, ASUS GTX 560Ti DirectCU II 1GB, Samsung 830series 512GB SSD, Corsair AX850w, two BENQ screens and TM HOTAS Warthog DCS: A-10C Warthog FAQ | DCS: P-51D FAQ | Remember to read the Forum Rules | | | Life of a Game Tester
EtherealN Posted January 29, 2012 Posted January 29, 2012 I checked with ED staff and my post should be correct. Flogger23m Posted January 29, 2012 Author Posted January 29, 2012 Thanks for the reply. At this time I was not intending of getting BS2, so I am thinking of waiting for a sale on ED's site in which I can get BS2 as that will be cheaper for me in the end.
grammaton_feather Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 OK I read through this and I am still unclear. I too have purchased the Steam version BS1 and want to upgrade. There is no KEY that I can see on steam with my purchase. I have downloaded the 1111 upgrade version, installed and of course it wants activation....

You buy the BS2 upgrade key on the main DCS site http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/ BS1 must be flown once, BS2 (v1.1.1.1) will then see the BS1 steam version and will install into a separate folder outside steam, and will ask for a BS2 upgrade key when you attempt to fly. Flogger23m Posted January 30, 2012 Author Posted January 30, 2012 I ended up getting DCS 1 from Steam. Hopefully it works fine with Steam.
