FatSlapper Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 Prior to 1.1.1.1 there was little or no masking of the TGP, Now it seems to mask too aggressively. Many times I get an "M" and I look at the TGP head and I look at the target and it is clearly line of site, maybe 20°-30° off the nose of the aircraft. And in many other attitudes I will pause the sim and zoom from the target to the lenses/head of TGP and it is within line of site and the target is clearly visible on the MFCD all this while the TGP is nowhere near its gimbal limits or obstructed by the airframe. This happens in all flights (single player) multi player is too unstable but I believe it has the same behavior . What gives?
nomdeplume Posted April 5, 2012 Posted April 5, 2012 Masking is based on configuration of the stores, rather than any kind of detection as to whether or not the view is actually obstructed. IRL I believe there's multiple masking profiles; in the sim, there's only one. So, I think the masking behaviour is based on a "worst case" scenario. It's just a limitation of the pod that you'll need to learn to work around. 20-30 degrees off the nose doesn't sound too bad though, unless you're at a fairly low altitude. If you're seeing masking which seems completely unreasonable you could pause it and post a series of screenshots showing the TGP's view as well as external views - I think you'd need to provide pretty compelling evidence that the masking is too aggressive.
FatSlapper Posted April 6, 2012 Author Posted April 6, 2012 (edited) I don't know that it is too aggressive. I don't know much at all about the A-10c outside of what I have learned from sims that's why I said "seems". I just don't know how or what tells the TGP that its in a masked state, I don't think it is photo recognition of the wing or stores or airframe because it masks before it sees them, Probably a mathematical mask based on gimbal position relative to the airframe and stores, but I digress. So when the TGP is masked and there is absolutely nothing near the TGP to cause it to mask makes You think "why" especially when in straight and level flight with the target clearly visible on the TGP with no airframe or stores nowhere near or about to obscure its view. Question for the experts: If its clearly visible in the MFCD and obscuring from airframe/stores or gimbal limits is NOT eminent within a couple of seconds WHY is it masked? I searched this topic using both default forum and Google and didn't find much, I would think the "Pros" would have notice this before Me... Edited April 6, 2012 by FatSlapper incomplete entry
Nate--IRL-- Posted April 6, 2012 Posted April 6, 2012 Nothing was changed since early BETA IIRC - the TGP has a set 3d masks of the aircraft built into it, one for each station it can be loaded on. The mask is enabled when entering a safety margin around this 3d model. Nate Ka-50 AutoPilot/stabilisation system description and operation by IvanK- Essential Reading
SmokeyTheLung Posted April 6, 2012 Posted April 6, 2012 So when the TGP is masked and there is absolutely nothing near the TGP to cause it to mask makes You think "why" High powered lasers are dangerous, so are weapon stores. System specifications: Computer, joystick, DCS world, Beer
