Track IR in Lockon...

Recommended Posts

Hi, my Track IR 3 Pro (with vector) just went this weekend, ... I installed it, did some tests if it was working, and launched lockon 1.1, then I played for hours.

I really liked the feeling and free look, but is it normal the frequent stutters? When i move my head, several times the image freezes/stops then come back to forward view... I have to say it is making me nervous, because it's happening a lot. And there's some situations it makes me lost in the air...

If this is a known bug/problem, do you know what can I do to solve or at least minimize the effects? I already reduced the video resolution (from 1280 to 1024) but it seems have no effect in stutters...

Thanks for your help!

Start up your Track IR software and go to 'view -> tracking'. You should see a black screen and your 3 VE dots. Now just move your head like you would in game, and check if the 3 VE dots all stay green. If not then you could try moving/adjusting the tracker. Also, try to cover up the centre dot (the one that is one the Naturalpoint cap by default), I experienced that when you get close to the edge of tracking that TIR can mix up the centre dot with one of the VE dots. Covering the centre dot elliminates that problem.

Give it a try and you should be fine.

Hi Invicta, thanks for your reply.

Well, in the Track IR software, the movement of three dots (the ones in a black window with 3 green dots) is very smooth and precise... but inside the cockpit of 1.1 it's another story... it stutters a lot and I realized there's a reduced field of motion (if I move my head too for right or up for instance the TIR looses tracking) so I need to stay right in front of it.

As for the Natural Point Hat... they didn't ship me that hat so I'm using an ordinary one (it's dark blue with a small sticker in front)...

You might benefit from a couple of things:

Using the tracking screen- check to see that other light sources are not showing in the camera's FOV. Sunlight especially.

Increase the size of your tracking dot.

How are the unit & dot oriented? A common error is mistaking what is "center" as far as the placement of your tracking unit- Especially if you have the dot on the end of a mic boom. Make sure that the unit is lined up on YOU & your dot, not the other way around. You're going to shift around as you fly. So, in the mic boom example- the tip of the mic is probably off to one side of your face's erm.. centerline. Move the unit over too. In my case- it's off to my right, thus, my TIR is off to the right. If you see that it tracks wonderfully to one side, and it goes berserk the other way- that's the problem.

My office chair has created 5 PERMANENT dents in my floor mat. I couldn't move my chair for long if I wanted to. Point is- the tracking dot is to the right of center as far as my monitor is concerned- so I had to move the track unit too.

My room is very protected from sunlight... the only light source is the bulb... it's a fluorescent light, could it affect the tracking?

Increase the size of your tracking dot.

How can I do it? I use Vector expansion clip, do you mean griping larger reflective stickers on the 3 points of VE?

What I really found strange is that when testing in the tracking screen it's absolutely smooth and precise, but in lomac it's rather erratic, pausing every time I move around or close to get a zoomed picture...

You have installed the fixes, yes? Perhaps the system is struggling with graphics settings that are too high?

Fixes? You mean the 1.02 & 1.1 patches? yes. I'll back home later and try lower my graphics quality and see if it works...

Thanks for the tips. =)

There's more! Look on lockon.ru for 2 fixes released shortly after the release of FC. just make CERTAIN you are downloading and installing the correct ones.

There were fixes made for the CD -and-

same fixes made for the downloaded version.

I'm guessing that you don't have "lock on gold" in Brazil...

Yeah, you're right there's no Lockon Gold in my country, I bought the CD version of Flaming Cliffs directly from Natural Point. I downloaded a stutter fix for multiplayer and a ground objects fix... as far as I remember that's the only fixes I got... do you know if they're related with Track IR?

Nope- sounds like you're up to date- check the graphics settings. There are certain things that will slow you down from time to time no matter what- lots of smoke & fire.. those damn hi res Mig skins in Multiplayer, certain AI planes & static objects, heat blur is a big drain too.. VIS RING set to "high" is supposed to be hell on a processor. That is true in my case (3.06g P4) If you have a gig of fast ram, 100 mile terrain preload should be ok.. Definitely a challenge to find that balance...
