Wolfie Posted May 11, 2012 Posted May 11, 2012 Hey guys, what is the max yaw (rotation) of the HAWK tracking radar unit? And if its not 360 degrees, do you need multiple units around a search radar? Also, where is the CP bunker or vehicle to control the radars? 2nd Question: Why do I not get a "spike" on the TWI? Its always solid, and the tracking radar and search radar seem to have the same range? Wrecking Crew Posted May 11, 2012 Posted May 11, 2012 The HIPIR radar with the Mickey Mouse ears is 360° azimuth and something like -10° to not quite 90° elevation, if I recall correctly from when I worked on them - that is the doppler/video tracking radar. The Continuous Wave Acquisition Radar (CWAR) bathtub-shaped radar is 360° rotation that is mostly for ranging (it was a while ago :-) The Pulse Acquisition Radar (PAR) is the big mesh basket radar and it is also 360° azimuth. Typically there was one PAR and Battery Control Central (BCC) and one CWAR, with two missile/radar combos of one HIPIR and three launchers that have three missiles each. Throw in a few 440 VAC generators and you have yourself a Homing All the Way Killer system. (Make sure the darn generators are grounded.) Wolfie Posted May 12, 2012 Author Posted May 12, 2012 Thanks. Its hard to find information on the azimuth even on the internet. Looks like we only got the HIPIR and the PAR ingame. Hopefully, ED will give us the other parts as this is a pretty good mid range missile system IMO. I know its obsolete, but many countries still use it, I hear. Wolfie Posted May 12, 2012 Author Posted May 12, 2012 Lol, great! Maybe you guys can help ED with it. Seems were missing some components. Especially the command trailer / vehicle / whatever. Wrecking Crew Posted May 12, 2012 Posted May 12, 2012 I'm actually working on the Hawk-system. :) Hi Redhawk, I was in Korea at the DMZ in '73-74 with B Battery 2/71st. Came back to Ft Bliss and taught the HIPIR radar to new recruits... How much of my description of the system has changed? When I worked on those radars they were full of mini-tubes with 250 VAC plate voltages. I put my arm across a 440 VAC fuse panel once and almost killed my sergeant with an open-end wrench as my hand came flinging out of the console. Question, too, if the modern HAWK system was off/standby, how long will it take before it is ready to fire?
