I just started trying out some night missions, however I'm having some trouble with the night vision goggles.

When I put them on (pressing h) they are totally washed out and I can't see anything.

What else should I be doing that I'm not to make them work properly?

There don't seem to be any tutorials or anything on night flying that I can find on Google, are there any recommended ones?

Thanks!

there are 3 knobs on the center panel in front of the stick, the one on the left is helmet-device brightness, and the one in the center is shkval display brightness. also, the knob at the bottom-left corner of the ABRIS is brightness for that, and the knob at the left corner of the HUD is brightness for that.

if you turn down all of these (NVG, Shkval, ABRIS, and HUD) it will make the NVGs more usable. Also, the switch directly under the manual-weapons-release-mode switch changes the Shkval indicator lines from white to black, this helps using shkval with NVGs on.

once everything is dimmed down where you don't get complete washout, bring the NVGs up to where you can see terrain, then uncage the shkval and bring its brightness up until you can see. Next, adjust ABRIS brightness a bit so you can see it. note, the NVGs differentiate colours poorly, so you will probably need to turn them off to get much useful info off the ABRIS.

glad i could help.

Side note: if you're planning to run a night op, load up some S8 rockets with flare illumination heads (can't remember which model type that is, you'll need to reference the manual for it). the shkval won't lock onto dick after dark, so you need flare to light up your targets.

Side note to your side note: You're 100% correct, but also don't forget, even without flares you can manually guide into target, just not autotracking (iirc)

spotlight is useless except for landing, and i never bother with it even for that (pad is illuminated when ATC clears you for final approach)

if you want to play around with it anyway, default binding to toggle it is Lshift-L. the modes of the toggle are Retract (default state), Off, and On. when in On, light will first fully deploy, then turn on, in Off position, light turns off but does not fold away, and in Retract position light turns off and folds.

Shkval can be manually slewed around to guide vikhr, but i this to be extremely tedious to manage, and downright frustrating if you are not in a hover and the shkval is drifting.

I found the spotlight great. At closer ranges it makes enemies easy to see. That combined with the fixed cannon worked pretty well for me.
