The keycommand list includes one for toggling the electro-Optical system in the Su-27/33 and MiG-29, but when I activate it nothing seems to happen. Anybody know anything about this?

While I'm on the line, does the MiG have ECM capability? Again, I can't see a confirmation light when I activate.

Thanks in advance!

if you are talking about "O" for EOS you will see a "T" in the left side of the HUD (if using russian HUD) and a horizontal line across the center of the HUD. This means the EOS system is on. Remember that you will not rec'v IFF info in this mode.

The ECM light in the MIG is on the right panel of green lights, left row just above the 2 manual flight control lights.

is this ok?

This is indicated in the HUD by a "T"(for "Thermal").

- The "MiG-29A" has no ECM capability

- The Su-27/33 has ECM, but only if you are carrying external ECM pods for the purpose.

- The MiG-29S has a built-in jammer(Gardeniya-1 FU) and thus no external devices necessary. When switching it on("E" key), a LED will illuminate.

Thank you, gentlemen - I'll do some familiarization with your advice tonight.

It's stated above that with the EOS off, I'll no longer receive IFF information. I'm still new to jetsims, so I'm a bit lost here. A couple of quick questions, therefore:

1. What does the EOS system do for me?

2. What constitutes IFF information in LOMAC?

3. Is EOS on by default?

4. Why would I turn it off?

Cheers,

Dave.

The EOS is your electro optical system. It's the small ball infront of the windscreen in the MiG-29 and Su-27/33. It is there to suplement the radar. It works by detecting heat signatures against backgroung ambient tempture. It works best if the enemy is facing away from you, heat from the engines you see.

It can allow you to detect and track targets without alerting their ECM and RWR gear. It's a passive system. It has far less range than a radar. The best detection range you will get out of it is around 50km.

It will allow you to fire your gun, and any IR missile. eg R-73, R-27T, R-27ET.

It will not provide guidance for radar guided missiles. eg R-77, R-27R, R-27ER.

Your EOS is not on by default but if you are tracking an enemy by radar and loose lock, the EOS will automatically take over. And vice versa.

1. It locks targets by their heat signature without using your radar. It is used in conjuction with the WVR modes (eg vertical scan) and also the BVR mode, although having EOS on and not radar in this mode changes the symbology of the hud slightly. As it requires a heat signature it is more powerful from the rear of a target, limited in range to about 20km (for a very hot target flying away from you). You can lock bandits up in EOS and they will not know you are doing so, and launch an IR missile (eg r73, r27ET) but not radar guided ones.

2. IFF - ifyou lock a non jamming freindly with radar you will get 'F' in the left of the hud, and they will appear as a circle on your MFD. You get no such warning in EOS only mode as you need radar to differentiate friendly from enemy.

3. If you press a WVR mode (3, 4 etc) yes. If you press 2, press 'o' to turn it on instead of I to put radar on.

4. You wouldnt.

The way I understand it, the "vice versa" isn't true. The EOS will activate to take over a lock from radar, but if you lose EOS lock with the radar switched off, the radar won't re-activate.

I gotta say I find this stuff fascinating. I'm going to print the contents of this thread and test the various points you've all raised. As it is, I'm not experienced enough in e-warfare to keep up with what's being posted.

Great discussion. I'm actually hoping it continues :)

It does (in bvr). Its a nightmare.

I hardly use EOS in bvr mode but I assume you're loosing lock because the bandit has flown outside the range of the EOS system and your radar has reacquired the lock..I can't say I've seen this in Vertical scan mode or while using the HMTD but I'll have to try it in BVR and see... Sounds like it could really ruin your day though especially if it took a lot of flying to sneak up on the target :( .

Ive never noticed the radar re-aquire the lock, but I have noticed it come on automatically into BVR scan mode when losing lock in BVR EOS mode. Yeah it ruins the whole thing!
