thekilroy Posted July 3, 2012 Posted July 3, 2012 Hi I recently purchased Black Shark 1, and I wasn't sure what the difference is between the paid upgrade version of BS2 (as seen in the E-shop) and the free upgrade version of BS2 (as seen in the Downloads/Software section). Does the paid version have more content or what?
cichlidfan Posted July 3, 2012 Posted July 3, 2012 (edited) Hi I recently purchased Black Shark 1, and I wasn't sure what the difference is between the paid upgrade version of BS2 (as seen in the E-shop) and the free upgrade version of BS2 (as seen in the Downloads/Software section). Does the paid version have more content or what? I am not sure what pages you were looking to see a FREE upgrade. There are two versions of the product (both can be downloaded for free but a key is still needed to activate them). There is the 'BS2 Upgrade', for $19.99 (which requires BS1 to be installed and activated). There is the 'BS2 Full' version for $39.99 which does not require BS1 at all. It just occured to me that you might have been looking at the BS2 patch for DCS World. That is a beta product that still requires a BS2 full version key. Attached is the part of the E-shop you should be looking at. thekilroy Posted July 3, 2012 Author Posted July 3, 2012 This says it patches BS1 to BS2, the same version as shown in the shop.
cichlidfan Posted July 3, 2012 Posted July 3, 2012 (edited) This says it patches BS1 to BS2, the same version as shown in the shop. Those are the downloads and they are freely available for anyone to download. However, without the correct key and, in the case of the upgrade prerequisite BS1 installation, they will not be playable. Technically, the key is what you are paying for. EDIT: Btw, both the upgrade and the full version are identical products. The upgrade only requires the presence of BS1 for authentication purposes but does not actually use any of the BS1 data. One other thing to be aware of is that the upgrade version of BS2 is currently not compatible with the Beta DCS World product. That issue will is supposed to be resolved with the next Beta update to DCS World/BS2. thekilroy Posted July 3, 2012 Author Posted July 3, 2012 I installed the patch from the downloads section and it works fine. I do not believe it asked me for a serial key when I installed it. Perhaps it is because I purchased BS1 on Steam? I am not sure. Does it install but not allow you to access the BS2 content? The menus and interface change after installing the patch, and it says that it's BS2.
cichlidfan Posted July 3, 2012 Posted July 3, 2012 Does it install but not allow you to access the BS2 content? The menus and interface change after installing the patch, and it says that it's BS2. It will ask for a key as soon as you attempt to fly a mission. BS1 is the same way except you never saw that because of the way Steam installed it. If you look you will find that your BS1 is still there as it's own standalone product. You can still play it. cichlidfan Posted July 3, 2012 Posted July 3, 2012 Ah, okay. Thanks. Once BS2 is installed you can actually delete/remove the BS1 installation. The downside is that if you needed to reinstall BS2 you would have to reinstall BS1 first. EDIT: Btw, Welcome to the forum.
