Gee, what to say? Despite being a beta (and visibly so), it's still quite astonishing. The sounds & visuals are the most immediately apparent cool things, but there's so much more than that. I love the new bailing-out system. I love the engine management--even though not yet finished, it's fairly convincing already.

The flight model is ... well, how do I put this? I never quite understood (and still don't fully, since I've never flown a real fighter) why real fighter pilots had such difficulty in evasion, because in other, less-realistic sim-games I've used (IL-2, Aces High II), it was usually pretty easy to shake someone off of your six, unless he was an insanely good V.F.P. A snaproll this way, a hard pull that way, drop flaps, and hey presto, I've turned the tables. Heh-heh, not here! Man, I find myself doing the "bitch wobble" more than anything else, just like I see real fighter pilots doing in videos. Now I know why they fly like that! They aren't so easy to fling around as they are in the popular sim-games.

So, even though the flight model hasn't been completed, it's already more convincing to me (not that I have personal experience flying the real fighter) than any other attempt at simulating a virtual Second World War fighter has been. Landings get my heart rate up; do you have any idea how many years it's been since a normal sim landing was able to do that to me? I've been doing flight sims since I was four years old, and I don't recall having a burst of adrenaline from a standard landing once in the last twenty years, until now.

There's so much more positive I could say about this sim, but I've rambled enough. Never mind what a handful of lazy philistines say--DCS: P-51D is, even in its current beta state, already amazing--in the most literal sense of the word--and I feel that it will only get better. Hats off, Eagle Dynamics. : )

DCS 51 is like nothing else I've ever flown / played (whatever) - truly awesome in my experience / opinion.

The range, depth and subtlety of control is mind blowing - spent a lot of time doing simple circuits over the weekend, and at the end of it I was still exploring different / better ways of getting fine control.
