Priest Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 Hi everyone, first post. My sim history goes back to when I was a kid with notables (at least to me) being F15 Strike Eagle and Falcon 3. Chuck Yeager Air Combat was awesome too. Actual military experience is USMC 1996-2000, 0351 Anti-Armor Assault. Deployed twice to Okinawa in my four years of service as part of our unit's regular rotation, saw no action. Honorably discharged as E5, Sergeant in 2000. Was not recalled post 9/11. So that's me. Anyways, been loving the hell of DCS. Did play a bit of Falcon 4.0 post-USMC, but the sim-bug really started back up with Black Shark, enjoyed it, learned a lot of it and then DCS: A-10... This thing is awesome. Convinced the lady to let me get the TM Warthog and yeah this thing is awesome too. Love it, think I have the plane pretty much figured out but.... I'm scared to death to launch "DCS World Multiplayer" What do I need to know, do, understand before I go down this path? I just want to fly around with folks and blow virtual shit up. 2
Cookie Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 (edited) Hey Priest, welcome to the forums. :) I'm scared to death to launch "DCS World Multiplayer Well, don´t be. ;) Just last night I had a guy come online asking the key shortcuts to start the engines. It was his first time ever (!) running the sim. By the end of the night, we had him up and running (well, kinda) through a combined team effort. By and large this is a really nice and helpful community, and as long as you are willing to learn and don´t back out when it comes to reading manuals, watching tutorials on YouTube and browsing these forums, you´re golden. So yeah, if you are able to get the A-10 up and running and maybe even know how to employ a weapon or two, you can click on that multiplayer button with nothing to worry about. Don´t be afraid of not knowing enough yet. I myself have been playing this sim for more than eight hours most days for the last three months or so (I am a firefighter and had a pretty bad accident on duty which I am slowly recovering from, so I have plenty of time at my hands right now) and still feel like I have barely scratched the surface. There are so many more things I still don´t really know about, and new stuff pops up every single day. Heck, I´ll go out on a limb here and say not even Matt Wagner knows absolutely everything about his very own software. :D Anyway... just do it. Click that little button and go online. Once you have made that step, you will never look back. Just click "multiplayer", log in with your ED account data (or register, in case you don´t have an account yet), choose a server that looks interesting and click on "join". That´s pretty much all there is to it. After you have made your first steps online, you may wanna check out one of the many virtual squadrons out there. There is a list somewhere around here, I´m sure there are squadrons near your place (the US, I assume?). That way you will have people you can ask things right away while still in the cockpit and of course people you can fly with on a regular basis so you can communicate via TeamSpeak, making the learning experience even easier. Whatever you decide to do though, just click on that magic little button and get ready for the ride of your lifetime! :joystick: Edited October 15, 2012 by Cookie - Two miles of road lead nowhere, two miles of runway lead everywhere - Click here for system specs
BlueRidgeDx Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 First and foremost, don't hesitate to try it out. I've been an avid simmer since I was 6 years old...in 1986. For all these years, with the exception of flying with my brother in the same house via LAN, I never flew online/multiplayer. I joined a virtual squadron about 6 months ago, and flew online for the first time. It's a game changer - literally. I wish I had done it years ago. I only have experience with one virtual squadron, and its standards are fairly demanding. However, there a plenty of squadrons out there that cater to varying levels of proficiency and realism. There are also public servers available for less structured "air quake" flying. If you're interested in a structured experience, I'd recommend checking out this thread for more info: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=34062&highlight=squadron+directory There's also a directory here: http://en.wiki.eagle.ru/wiki/Virtual_Squadrons_and_Regiments "They've got us surrounded again - those poor bastards!" - Lt. NECK Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 Hello and welcome Priest. I think I am somewhere near your stage regarding the sim. I can handle it, but havent played multiplayer. Send me a pm, and maybe we can team up and try some flying together. ENO Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 Eh priest- exactly the type of fliers we like to entertain at the firehouse. Wanting to learn and enjoy the team play, while keeping it casual. We do have a thread going at simhq in the a-10 section and a server we try to keep running 24hrs with regular fliers from all over the world. TS3 is a staple- especially as a beginner. Tm hog controls are great too because we can help with the inputs more easily... Tms up short command isn't some other 4 key combination with a modifier or something. It's just tms up short. Anyway not meaning to take anything away from this site- but you want a first step and I think we have a great playground for you. We run a mix of custom missions created mostly by wrecking crew, some training missions from stp dragon, as well as great ones like op Bactria and select others. Crews missions are great because they typically force you to learn different aspects of the sim in each mission. I digress. Hope to see you around there- neck- that goes doubly for you too! 1 "ENO" Type in anger and you will make the greatest post you will ever regret. "Sweetest's" Military Aviation Art
