Having played DCS for a while I've noticed that AAA systems are quite hard to spot in the A-10, but when flying the Su-25T with an ELINT pod against NATO AAA, they all come up as a diamond, making them very easy to spot even in the camouflage of the Caucauses.

 

Given the short range of AAA systems, is it not more prudent to use a passive infra-red/optical based system, unless it's on something like a ship that already has radars anyway?

Radar = superior accuracy.

 

The problem in DCS right now is that they're not very smart about when they turn on their radar, unles the mission designer makes them so.

With optical systems can't scan the areas that fast and detect positively, IR can be used but what if the target passes between the line of sight and sun, target will surely be lost. And again IFF is necessary.

Smart electronics could sort out the sun from the target, with electro-optical tracking possibly. The sun's light must be cut off slightly by the aircraft, so you look for the cooler spot.
