I was wondering if anyone here has any software recommendations for video capture and editing software? I know of the usual FRAPS and Windows Movie Maker, but I'm currently having problem with FRAPS, the F9 key sometimes does not capture video and I can't tell if it's recording or not.

Also, I am flying with a multi-monitor setup and I was hoping to be able to record screen 1 (instrument display screen) and screen 3 (center screen of my tri-screen setup) simultaneously.

Thanks for any help!

You should be able to change the FRAPS keybinding, F9 isn't working properly because it's already mapped within the sim.

Try another unused key (scroll lock, Insert, etc).

When you're recording the FPS counter should turn to red.

I think FRAPS is one of the best option to record ingame footage.

There are other software (DXtory, MSI afterburner,...) but I'm not sure they work with DCS, well I know Afterburner isn't which is sad cause it has a really small impact on performances, lighter than FRAPS.

To edit your video Sony Vegas is a really nice tool, more complex than Windows movie maker and thus a little harder to use in the beginning.

Yeah, but unfortunately, FRAPS seems to be temperamental in my experience. Any other screen capture software suggestions?

I've used a free program called Jing to record desktop action for videos. It records into a Flash (*.SWF) format, so you might need to convert it to an avi or mpeg to use in your editor of choice.

Jing website: http://www.techsmith.com/jing.html

And a video I made setting up Teamspeak Whispers using this program.

Hope this helps,

Dxtory is an excellent program and a lot more people are switching to it.

Best two features it has are:

It does not chop your recordings like fraps, one continuous file until you stop recording.

It records two sound streams. The ingame, and then your microphone, so in the editor you can manipulate them separately.

Oh, and it also does not make your video drop down to the FPS you are recording. For example, if I am recording at 30FPS, but Im getting 60 FPS in game, then thats what my screen is going to stay at (60FPS). FRAPS drops you instantly to whatever FPS you are recording at, but even lower at times.

However it does not record desktop at the moment.

Thanks guys!

ralfidude, I've heard of Dxtory, I'll give it a go. What do you mean "does not record desktop"? It can only take in-game vids, but not able to do program/desktop tutorial vids?

Yes, as in, DXtory can only capture game footage, it does not capture desktop.

Youtube some setups for DXTORY, it is a bit difficult to get the hang of it from scratch, so watch someones youtube tutorial on it.

The BEST codec to use for it is this one (http://lags.leetcode.net/codec.html), you will see where that comes in once you look through some of the tutorial vids.

Xsplit will also do recording to files, and doesn't twerk your framerate like FRAPS. Also makes it super easy to stream.
