IvanK Posted November 27, 2012 Posted November 27, 2012 I am trying to establish the exact radar beam width modelled in FC3 to come up with a workable scan search technique. Could the devs make a definitive statement as to the Beam width or total angular scan volume in elevation for the F15,SU27,SU33 and Mig29 ? Given we cant select numbers of bars etc some default value must be used by each type. Using the Alt coverage values in the F15 and basic trig it would seem the FC3 F15 elevation coverage bottom to top of the scan is 10degrees (+-5 from beam centreline).
GGTharos Posted November 28, 2012 Posted November 28, 2012 Which is about right for the average mode of use with the bars spaces 2.5 deg apart. It changes depending on the range scale and radar mode, but those things aren't modeled IIRC. IvanK Posted November 28, 2012 Author Posted November 28, 2012 So its safe to assume in FC3 for all types the scan volume in elevation is +-5 degrees. ?
GGTharos Posted November 28, 2012 Posted November 28, 2012 I would be tempted to say yes unless otherwise specified. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
JB3DG Posted November 28, 2012 Posted November 28, 2012 I dont know what ED has done in FC3 but according to the manuals i have, beam width is 2.5 deg, however bar spacing varies with the scan type. I havent gone through everything yet but typical spacing between bars is 1 deg. At 20nm range bar spacing becomes 2.5 deg and at 10nm it becomes 3.4 deg. Someone correct me if im wrong.
IvanK Posted November 28, 2012 Author Posted November 28, 2012 What I am getting at is what is modelled in FC3. Beam widths etc IRL (certainly for the western stuff) data is easier to obtain than a definitive statement for what is modelled in FC3 :). As I understand all the AA radars in FC3 use the same basic core. Using the F15 where range an altitude coverage are displayed in the Sim its easy to deduce it covers a fixed 10deg elevation. Given we cant select number of bars etc though they are clearly there if you observe the elev caret it looks like its 4 bar scan at 2.5deg per bar = 10deg total coverage. The Russian stuff is a little more convoluted to test. no bar scan is evident watching the elev caret and the "Expected target range" setting varies the actual elev increment per press. In my tests I get a range of elevation coverage with values up to 13 degrees. ... though I accept there will be errors in my test methodology. Which I s why I ask is it 10degrees for all types ?
