splash Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 Hi, I'm currently flying Su-25 in Flaming Cliffs 2 and I have some doubts about flaps utilisation when taking off and landing. I normally use full flaps in both procedures but I think it is possible to take off by using partial flaps when payload is not full. Could you please comment some suggestion, in general, for flaps utilisation? When I reach the fence in waypoint I use partial flaps too to get some more lift whan flying at low speeds. Which are the maximum allowable speeds (TAS or IAS) for partial/full flaps? Many thanks!
EtherealN Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 During takeoff you want half flaps. Generally i also would advice against ever going slow in combat, speed is the money you spend to defend against threats like MANPAD and AAA. Not at the computer so cant give details until later today. Dustoff74 Posted December 6, 2012 Posted December 6, 2012 With Flaps you alter the profile of the wing. You gain more lift, that´s correct, but nothing is for free and with increased lift comes increased drag and you don´t want that, unless you are in the approach and want to slow down. So flaps enable your aircraft to fly at slower speed, but with higher drag. That´s usefull for take-offs and landings, as runway length doesn't come unlimited. Because drag is not good for your take-off acceleration either, you take an intermediate flap setting. Usually you find that in your airplane manual. In flight you would use flaps only if you have to go really slow for a good reason. in RL commercial flying that would be an ATC instruction. Or if you are a tanker pilot and have some Warthogs to refuel, that fly slower than your minimum "clean" airspeed. In some situations you might use flaps in a turning dog fight, if you need just that little bit of extra turn rate. But that will kill your airspeed rapidly! And as EtherealN mentioned, speed is your cash and life-insurance while flying combat. 1 Rock 'n' Roll! Henning
GGTharos Posted December 6, 2012 Posted December 6, 2012 I a jet fighter you're also likely to destroy your flaps by doing that (N/A in FC/DCS for the moment). They'll either blow up and won't come back down, or they will blow off. If you don't have some form of automatic combat control for the flaps, leave'em alone and tucked in during combat. They can be used, but the situations for such are very narrow and 'going slow' in combat is usually not a good enough excuse to use them. splash Posted December 12, 2012 Author Posted December 12, 2012 Hi again, Yesterday I had a multiplayer flight and I practised your explanations about flaps utilisation. You were right, it is better not to deploy full flaps when taking off. I taked off with full fuel and R-60 I haven't got any problem at all. Could you please tell me if you use some curvature in axis configuration (I set it up in the game not in the CH Manager)? I tried "30" and my plane had poor response, albeit I could aim better than before. Thanks in advance.
GGTharos Posted December 12, 2012 Posted December 12, 2012 Hi, Curves are always a trade-off. The best thing you could do is extend your stick to reach some 2 feet/60cm. Unfortunately this is not an easy modification to make. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
