G-Lock91 Posted December 11, 2012 Posted December 11, 2012 Do you have a budget? Take a look at the GTX 460 series if ya do. You may need a new power supply if ya get one, unless you go with the 796mb version. EtherealN Posted December 11, 2012 Posted December 11, 2012 If upgrading, I see no reason not to go for current gen - something like 650, 660 or 660Ti. Unless the price is rediculously low on the old stuff. Nopileus Posted December 11, 2012 Posted December 11, 2012 actually the 660 would be the newest equivalent of the 460, mr. G-Lock recommended a more than two year old card. In short: GTX660 (or Ti of budget allows) Or if you want AMD HD7850 or HD7850 depending on budget Remember that for DCS the CPU is much more important than the graphics card, so do not expect too much. PS: Your PSU will do nicely.
G-Lock91 Posted December 11, 2012 Posted December 11, 2012 Gtx 550 ti? Confused? Like I said, you might need to update ur power supply if u go with a higher end card... No he doesn't, that 500watt has plenty of power to accommodate most, if not any single-GPU graphics cards on the market right now. EtherealN Posted December 12, 2012 Posted December 12, 2012 (edited) People on these forums for some reason always encourage others to buy more than they actually need, i am failing to understand why... There is a good reason for "oversizing" power supplies: a typical PSU is at it's most effective at roughly 50% load. This means that through oversizing such that you'll reach only that half-point when under full load, you will save a lot of money ojn your electricity bill. this is aggravated by the fact that most manufacturers of complete pre-built systems save a lot of component cost through using cheap and inefficient power supplies. But it is correct that it is not necessary, it's just a matter of spending money now in order to save money later. EDIT: Graph for a PSU similar to mine: Whether there are actual power savings depend on the existing PSU, the expected load, the price of a possible replacement, how much the computer is expected to be used and for how long the unit is expected to be in service. (My unit has a 7 year warranty, so it's high price iss offset by the fact that I expect to re-use it in the next computer re-build as well and possibly even the one after that.)
