TrackIR is basically infrared-light sensitive WebCam with small infrared illuminator. The illuminator illuminates reflective dot(s) which you have to wear on your head. For just look left/right/up/down TrackIR needs just one reflective dot. For 6DOF (head position + rotation tracking) it uses three reflective dots. Based on where those three dots appear on the IR WebCam picture it calculates head position and rotation ...
