Hello,

is there someone, who can give me some hints of how to effectively use radar and EO system of russian fighters? Without help of EWR or AWACS ofc :)

For example, Im flying CAP with MiG29, and I know there are enemy fighters out there, so I fly and try to locate them with radar. Ussualy, i ends up with contact on RWR, then im finnaly able to locate guy, lock him and thats ussualy last thing i do.....AIM120 is already half way to me....

So i ask, if there is someone or some thread ( i was not able to find any ) that can explain how to effectively scan different altitudes and directions.

Thanks in advance :)

Hey Johny, here are some tips,

1- First set the right radar pulse frequency (HI, ILV, MED)

- Hi gives you best detection range but works best for head on targets.

- MED works best for extending targets.

- ILV is a compromise that suits almost all aspects but detection range is limited.

2- Point the radar to the right heading and set elevation according to your own altitude : if you're at 5000m start scanning from 0 an go up to +3 then all the way down to -3 while tilting the radar in a pyramidal way from side to side to cover 120 degrees azimuth. stay half a second on every level to allow the radar to refresh correctly and avoid missing a potential contact.

If you're below 2000m, start at 0, go -1 and then all the way up to + 6.

If you're above 8000m start at 0, go +1 then all the way down to -6.

The closer the target and the higher or the lower you should go with elevation.

Don't rely too much on EOS, use it for a couple of seconds then switch back to radar unless you know what you are hunting and want to go for a silent kill.

Hope that helps.

Also, if you get a hit on your RWR, it could be the bandit and he may see you. Depending on how far away he is and altitude you could have a shot in the air soon after. You'll have to be the judge on his distance. If you are trying to be sneaky then you'll need to change altitude and or direction. Use terrain like mountains if they are near by.
