Hey, I think I just found out the main reason water affects the performance. I've searched the forums and there are some threads about lowering water setting but none references this. Lowering the setting works and helps a lot even if you are above land most of the time. But why?

And the reason is that, there's water all around!!! And its still being rendered even if you don't see it.

I noticed it a few days ago when somehow I glitched below ground and was over a high mountain and I saw water there. Then I realized, water is everywhere, below the airport or the mountains. It doesn't matter where you are or if its on its lowest setting. It's still there.

My wish is that ED could find a way or algorithm or w/e to remove the water from everywhere (except obviously rivers and sea) cause its affecting the performance since every frame you have to waste resources on the water you can't shake off! Pun intended.

Thanks in advance

Perhaps the new engine EDGE will solve this issue.

Lets hope it also uses multiple cores but that s just a Santa wish.

Maybe ASL measuring depends on it and they cant take it out as easy. and the reason why they haven't already.

The reason why they haven't is that it is common practice. Every game does it like that simply because the added shore geometry would make things even worse. I don't know if Z-culling could actually be improved in the case of water (probably), but last i heard, not having water under the landscape would not give any gain FPS wise.

Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two.

its impossible to remove the water from where it is not needed, its simply how maps are built when using large bodies of water like the sea.

Every game out there that has the sea or a large lake that covers most of the map, has water under the terrain. its simply easier to make, doesnt necessitate the use of multiple planes which could cause problems when overlaying the water textures, that would be glaringly visible from any distance.

I do not believe that removing the water from the rest of the map where its not needed would give you any kind of a performance boost, simply because its not dynamic, and its effectively one texture tile being repeated over and over again, that's why when your high up and you look down on to the sea it looks tiled.

I mentioned about this in this thread too. You're right...
