Upgrade Help

Recommended Posts

Hi all.

I'm planning to upgrade my system and I need some help wit it.

Right now my system is a PIV 2.4GHz, 1GB DDR RAM and an agp 8x Nvidia 6800GT. I'm planning to buy a new CPU and motherboard and have like $500 to do so.

I've decided to go with AMD so my first question is:

Which AMD processor should I get? (around $400)

I want to use my AGP 8x Nvidia 6800 and the RAM I've got (DDR). Considering that which motherboard should I buy?

Hi juan_mol, it sounds to me like you might be looking for the AsRock 939 dual sata2 mobo. It supports your agp card and will have you ready to upgrade to dual core, socket M2 and PCI express...can't beat that with a stick. :icon_jook

As far as your processor, I'm not sure if you want dual core (X2 AMD's) but if you have $400 and aren't into overclocking (the AsRock board isn't supposed to be a huge overclocker anyway) I'd say at least look at the 4000+. Mebbe check Pricewatch and Newegg to get some idea on prices. I'm not sure what speed your ram is but you can pick up a gig of Corsair value select PC 3200 for around $80 at Newegg.

One other thing, make sure your PSU is up to the task. A nice Antec True power 480 might be a good choice if your PSU is getting long in the tooth.

Juan,

If you're upgrading for Lomac then personally, I'd get this cpu...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103529

With that 4200 X2 you're giving up 512 megs L2 cache and 200 mhz clock speed as compared to the 4000+ San Diego core. If dual-core is important to you then yeah, that's a fine choice but Lomac doesn't do anything with dual-core.

That mobo you listed is gonna leave you stuck with AGP! Plus, it has a VIA chipset which isn't supposed to be as good as an Nforce (or Uli in my case) board. I'd stay away...go with the AsRock board.

I would go with the asrock before getting a mb with a via chipset.

the 335 buck cpu the 4000 would be great , just stay away from via and should be alright.

Look at my sig I just built this system ITS A AGP BOARD. ati is still building AGP video cards or at least it is now on the drawing board as a new release. There will be NO SHORTAGE of fast AGP cards anytime soon

Asus P8Z68-V GEN3/ 2500k 4.4ghz / Corsair 64gb SSD Cache / Corsair 8g 1600 ddr3 / 2 x 320gb RE3 Raid 0 /Corsair 950w/ Zotac 560TI AMP 1gb / Zalman GS1200 case /G940/
