9.JG27 DavidRed Posted March 28, 2013 Posted March 28, 2013 hello guys! normally im using the default axis settings for the P51.after some time i got used to feel the limits and i dont see any need to adjust the elevator or aileron axis. i can also fly well without curvature on the rudder pedals(ch-pro pedals), but here its really hard to center the ball. though i dont use it, i can see the need for curvature for elevator and aileron axis, to compensate for the shorter travel of desktop sticks, but i dont see it for rudder pedals.arent they approximately of the same size, and have approximately the same distance of travel? anyway, i noticed, that its way easier, if i set a curvature of 20 for my pedals.... but to make things easy is not my intention....i want to keep it as real as it gets from my desk... so, preferably, RL pilots, or even better RL pilots with P51 experience, or ideally RL P51 pilots who are owners of CH-Pedals (i doubt i find anyone), whats your opinion about it?whats the most realistic axis setting for the rudder?(ch-pedals)
EvilBivol-1 Posted March 28, 2013 Posted March 28, 2013 (edited) The issue is not just the travel distance, but the force exerted and responsiveness to input. With simming pedals, it's much harder to have smooth, precise inputs than in reality. A curve on the sim rudder axis is a good idea, because it increases the precision around the neutral position, which is generally where your pedals are operated (unlike, for example, a helicopter, where the pedals may be heavily pressed for long periods of time). Setting a curve on the pitch and roll axes is more of a compromise, because while it increases precision around the middle, it decreases it further away, which can be a problem for those who dogfight and often need the stick to be pulled well aft of neutral. Still, some curve is usually helpful and it's a matter of personal preference and hardware. Edited March 28, 2013 by EvilBivol-1 - EB [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Nothing is easy. Everything takes much longer. Echo38 Posted March 29, 2013 Posted March 29, 2013 (edited) EvilBivol has explained the most important point. But another issue is pedal-to-pedal distance. Real fighters always have much wider-set pedals than the CH ones. I've explained this point numerous times in the past, in various forums, so I'll just grab a few quotes: CH and Logitech pedals are both set much closer together than are those on real fighters, and are instead approximately of distance found on civilian aircraft such as the Cessna 152 and airliners. There's a reason, you see, why all real fighters (all of the hundreds I've seen, anyway) from any era have wide-set pedals; it's the same reason a man stands with his feet apart when expecting to be shoved, or when attempting to maintain balance. A wide base improves stability, and in an aircraft, this wide spacing of pedals improves potential precision. In short, in a fighter, one wants a "fighter's stance" and not a "ballerina's stance." Even the old Great War kites had their rudder bar sized in such a manner that they placed one's feet that far apart. F/A-18, F-16, F-15, A-10, P-51, P-38, Me-109, P-39, P-47, SPAD S.XIII, Fokker Dr.I, Nieuport C.17, the list goes on and on and on. I've never seen a real fighter which had pedals close together like the CH pedals. Edited March 29, 2013 by Echo38
