rasputin Posted January 1, 2006 Posted January 1, 2006 Hey all, I've noticed I get wierd texture tearing without v-sync enabled. It looks like horizontal lines across the upper middle of the screen when I pan around in the pit....most noticeable in the canopy frame area. V-sync fixes this but it absolutely rapes my card by about 18 FPS. I never ran v-sync with my 9800Pro and I didn't see this anomoly. I dunno if this might have something to do with switching to Nvidia, my driver (82.12 forceware) or my new LCD monitor. BTW, I ran the usual driver cleaner process when switching to the 7800GT. ----------------------------- AMD Athlon 64 3800+ Asrock 939 Dual SATA 2 mobo 1024 Corsair PC3200 XFX 7800GT Antec True Blue 480 Samsung 940B Track IR4 Saitek X-45 HOTAS Win XP Pro
chennuts Posted January 2, 2006 Posted January 2, 2006 Vsync shouldn't cause any decrease in fps with one exception. It's only function is to limit the maximum possible fps so as to not exceed your monitor's refresh rate, thus preventing the tearing effect you describe.
Guest EVIL-SCOTSMAN Posted January 2, 2006 Posted January 2, 2006 as chennuts says, vysnc doesnt cause you to lose any fps as such, what it does is lock your fps to what your monitor refresh rate is, so say your monitor refresh rate is 75hz, then with vsync on, you will not get higher than 75fps,but you can get lower. and since humans can only detect 25 or so fps and anything above that is wasted then vsync should always be on, unless its for benchmarking, never have vsync on for benching... both nvidia and ati suffer from vsync, its not a specific video card maker problem, why you never experienced it with your ati card is unknown to me, maybe it was on and you thought it wasnt ? i cant say but for fast moving games and views, both sets of cards suffer from tearing and shearing without vsync enabled. Tundra Dart, your video card, the lower clock speed could of been caused by the card being in 2d mode, as when in windows the card is in 2d mode and will run at lower clock speeds, only when you start to game will the 3d mode kick in and the proper clock speeds be enabled. All video cards are different, ive had one that displayed 250mhz 2d mode and 500 odd 3d mode clock speed, and the same type of card but made by another maker had the exact same 2d and 3d speeds of 550mhz. so i would tend not to worry if you see a lower clock speed when not playing a game, i would be worried if it was low when gaming, but in windows, its probably just underclocked itself as power clock speeds are not needed unless there is a 3d application running.
Shaman Posted January 2, 2006 Posted January 2, 2006 NVIDIA card here. My profile for lockon is V-sync forced on, and tripple buffering forced on. Vsync only reduces maximum possible framerate to monitor refreshrate, but fixes tearing (I hate tearing! I use vsync in all my games). 51PVO Founding member (DEC2007-) 100KIAP Founding member (DEC2018-) :: Shaman aka [100☭] Shamansky tail# 44 or 444 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] 100KIAP Regiment Early Warning & Control officer
rasputin Posted January 2, 2006 Author Posted January 2, 2006 Lemme get this straight, the only time I'll see tearing is when my fps # exceeds my monitors refresh #? :o ----------------------------- AMD Athlon 64 3800+ Asrock 939 Dual SATA 2 mobo 1024 Corsair PC3200 XFX 7800GT Antec True Blue 480 Samsung 940B Track IR4 Saitek X-45 HOTAS Win XP Pro
