I experimented with the 'RTB on Bingo Fuel' option for a tanker, but it doesn't seem to work.

I have a tanker do a racetrack for like an hour, then it decides it has to head home.. its flight pattern changes, it breaks out of its racetrack, but it just flies this weird circuit and never actually lands back at the airport it took off from. Until it falls like a brick

My questions are:

Do I have to do anything special to get this to work? I set the option to 'on' at the tankers initial position.

What should happen? Will the tanker RTB, refuel, then repeat its flight plan? Or just RTB and do nothing?

"We could come back with hydraulics shot out, half the tail shot off, piece of the wing shot off, we had two engines and could come home with one... She really was a piece of machinery that you could fly into hell and back... And she was designed around that gun from day 1"

I wish I could be more help- but the last time I used it whenever the tanker reached a waypoint I'd set that as a waypoint action, it bingo'd for fuel immediately. It was as if I was just giving it the instruction to RTB once it got to that waypoint.

So unless I wanted to give some legit reason to head the tanker for home at a certain point (instead of guessing about its fuel state) then I would use that... but I have never had that scenario- especially now that tankers are broke.

I was just experimenting with this last night. I'm having the same problem as the OP.

He goes to his way point that I assign the orbit for. And he did leave the orbit when he was bingo, and started to head back towards the airport. But instead of landing, he just flew some odd pattern until he ran out of fuel and crashed.

My goal is to build a mission where I set flags for when all enemy units are destroyed, new ones spawn back in (not even sure if that's possible) and the tanker continues a refueling mission. Anytime he's Bingo'd, I want him to fly back, refuel, and take off again to continue the circuit as before. All this is really just to keep a free-flight mission up and running without restarting it every few hours.

Has anyone done things like this before?

Yeah its a bug. AI should orbit until less than 5% of total fuel remains and then RTB. It appears that they try to RTB but can't get into the pattern to actually land, thus run out of fuel and fall like a brick. Hopefully it'll be fixed in 1.2.7 but I can't say for sure.

They should simply RTB. AI are mostly unable to land, re-arm, and resume their flight plan. To accomplish that you need to create additional flights to take-off again once the aircraft lands.

I say mostly because I'm pretty sure helicopter wingmen can land at FARPS and re-arm/refuel as long as they are following the commands of a player. Doesn't work for airbases though due to how they are setup within the sim.

The right man in the wrong place makes all the difference in the world.
