chichi290 Posted January 1, 2014 Posted January 1, 2014 Hi all! I need some help with when to employ countermeasures. Lets say i get locked by an R-27 i tend to chaff and flare but which one is appropriate at lets say 5NM? I usually flare break hard and drop the throttle :joystick: but 9 times out of 10 i still get hit by that little sucker . I fly the F-15c. Thanks for the replies and happy new year!!!
Night Posted January 1, 2014 Posted January 1, 2014 (edited) The goal with an R-27 is to put the chaff between you and the enemy aircraft that is locking you, and then break away. This way, the missile will continue to follow the chaff. With an active missile like the R-77 and AMRAAM, put the chaff between you and the missile itself. It is standard Soviet doctrine to fire off an IR seeking missile along with a radar guided missile. That is why it is a good idea to fire off flares as well, because you never know what else the Russian pilot fired off at you, your RWR can only warn you about the radar guided missiles. But chaff should be your absolute last resort. Kinetic tactics are much more effective, it is much easier and more effective to make a missile run out of energy than to try and confuse it with chaff. chichi290 Posted January 2, 2014 Author Posted January 2, 2014 Now I understand what I was doing wrong. Thanks for the reply!

This way, the missile will continue to follow the chaff. I doubt that it works this way. Because after release, the chaff cloud immediately drops speed and will be filtered out because of the missing Doppler. Bringing chaff between your aircraft and the opponents radar (AI, active missile seeker or SAM) instead likely will break the lock. But a radar guided missile will not "follow" the chaff... An IR-seeker missile actually will follow a bunch of flares, but that's a different story.... kind regards, Raven.... [sigpic]http://www.crc-mindreader.de/CRT/images/Birds2011.gif[/sigpic]
EtherealN Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 Depends really; deploy your chaff and then dissapear into the notch yourself. But yes, the chaff is an addition to what you really should be doing - exploit the doppler notch and make it bleed energy. Chaff just makes it slightly easier, but chaff on it's own nowadays is not going to cut it.
