Eh guys.

ROVER as I've recently learned in the book A-10s in Afghanistan was a laptop sized device that allowed a JTAC to see the image a Lightning equipped A-10 pilot (or 40 other aircraft types) was looking at on the TGP. Though wildly flexible across a broad spectrum of aircraft, I'm speaking specifically to the A-10C in this thread.

It got me thinking to the way guys broadcast that image to multiple monitors or their MFDs...

I then started thinking about PeterP and his kneeboard concept... And the exporting of displays to other monitor setups.

I then began contemplating the potential- granted I don't have the skills to put it together... Is there anything that would prevent you from broadcasting the same data that you send to your own MFD / separate monitor- versus sending it (provided the server exports / broadcasts as it would need to for Tacview) to another client?

I figure the program already knows where the TGP image is... the idea would be to broadcast it to someone else's MFD. Many JTAC players have pretty elaborate cockpits they use for other modules, so the thought that one might use his MFD in that capacity as a JTAC might use his laptop sized device doesn't seem out of plausibility.

The function already appears to exist in some form- it's just a matter of figuring out from some experts in the field how to get the signal from point A to point D...

The JTAC would need a function to choose whose TGP image he is requesting. I expect it would be an F10 radio function or something to that effect.

It could either be to a separate MFD, monitor or an overlay to a configured position of choice.

You don't have to have a laptop, the receiver can talk to a laptop over ethernet or it can send video directly to a monitor. A laptop is nice because you can use it alongside something like FalconView to see the aircraft's location as well as the viewed area on a map, which would be extremely valuable, although I don't know if that would be possible in-game at the moment. But just having a rover feed for a JTAC would be a big deal.

Sorry- I just meant in the current RL scenario I believe the Rover is used on a Toughbook or some other sort of laptop. The Rover feed in DCS could, as you said, be anything that was configured. Be a pretty need Ipad app, actually.

Anyway, all just thoughts on possible development.

Be safe "over there" 1-6.

No, I'm tracking what you're saying. We have some of our helicopters set up with Rover downlink receivers. In the back, we have the receiver send data to a laptop via Ethernet, but the receiver also has a direct video out that goes to a small screen in the cockpit. So the pilots can see the video feed, while at the same time someone in the back of the helicopter can be using the laptop, watching the feed, and using other apps at the same time, like FalconView. So you don't *need* a laptop, there are plenty of Rover setups that just send the decoded video feed directly to a monitor of some kind.

Also tonight is my last flight, I'm out of here on Friday! I'l be home Saturday, and on the beach in Mexico by Monday. :D

Oh frick man- don't jinx it... that's like cops being 3 days from retirement... our guys talking about how quiet its been this tour and simmers talking about how stable the transition to 1.2.7 is going to be.

And how about you add to your list that you're heading towards pings of under 800!

Rover sounds like an extremely flexible tool... Any possibility that the devs have a porthole of that functionality in their bag of tricks? Something we might be able to work with to mod in the same fashion as guys working with their multi monitor setups?

No clue what the devs are up to. If they are serious about this whole JTAC thing then I would think it's just a logical progression.

Also, re: Jinx...well, I jinxed it. The aircraft that was supposed to pick me up tomorrow has bad gas so the flight was cancelled. So I may have another flight or two before I leave. Part of the beauty of being on the helo crew is that if the fixed wing can't come get me, we'll just fly the helo to swap me out, so not sweating too much yet. I'm jinxing myself again, aren't I?
