Now I have a 7 year old I believe 22" monitor (1680x1050) that runs DVI-D SINGLE link input. I ordered my new computer and the video card (gtx 780) has support for DVI-I and D DUAL link output, HDMI and another option I'm even less familiar with.

With that said, can I run signal from a DVI-D DUAL link video card to a DVI-D SINGLE link monitor?

I've searched up and down and seen both yes and no. As seen here in the 4th line of the 3rd paragraph http://www.networktechinc.com/blog/differences-between-dvi-connectors-and-signals-2/276/ this writer seems to be saying no, it doesn't.

What does everyone's experience or knowledge have to say? If it is a no, would some kind of HDMI to DVI-D single link converter cable work?

Thanks,

Chris

Well I would say Yes.. It would be logical to say if you can run a dual with the vid card it should be backwards compatible so you can run a single..

You could try and it and let us know worst case it will just not work..

That's my intent but I don't want to be down waiting for a solution. Trying to trouble shoot before it becomes a problem.

Any other input would be appreciated.

DVI-D single link cable will fit into DVI-D dual link connector on the VGA. Some holes will be left empty on VGA connector, but they are not used for single link connection anyway, so everything will be fine.

Some monitors use/ need 2 dvi connections to work.High resolution and 3d. If you are using 1080p or less one connection will work and you can use the other connection for a second monitor. So basiclly the type of monitor dictates what you use.
