predavolk Posted January 12, 2014 Posted January 12, 2014 Hi guys. After finding DCS, I bought an old copy of LOMAC (annoying as I only tossed my copy out a few months ago) and installed FC3. OMG it was a joy to be behind the stick of my good ol' Flanker again! I've been flying it since the original Flanker, then Flanker 2, then LOMAC, then almost 10 years away from it. Coming back to the Su-25 was like flying a bloated pig through the sky in comparison. So I'm having great fun tooling around the sky. But two things are nagging me: 1- Without the great training missions that DCS newer titles have, I would like to track down the manual. Where is it located in the file folder? 2- The flight models of the Su-27, and especially the Su-33, seem simplified compared to the Su-25T. For example, you can drive it off-road on the ground with the agility of a Ferrari whereas the Su-25T was a truck that ground to an immediate halt when off pavement. While ground taxiing is obviously not a major issue, I'm curious if this extends to other aspects of the airplane's modelling (i.e., its flight modelling). If it is a less advanced modelling, will this be addressed in the solo title release? Thanks in advance for any replies, I'm really, really happy to be flying a hi-fidelity sim of the might Flanker again!
Yurgon Posted January 12, 2014 Posted January 12, 2014 2- The flight models of the Su-27, and especially the Su-33, seem simplified compared to the Su-25T. The Su-25T was the first of the Flaming Cliffs aircraft that received an Advanced Flight Model (AFM). I'm not quite up to date with FC3, but I believe it's still the only one with AFM.
Robin_Hood Posted January 12, 2014 Posted January 12, 2014 1. All aircraft specific manuals are located in DCS World\Mods\aircrafts\[module name]\Doc. The GUI and mission editor manual is located in DCS World\Doc, along with charts. This is a little confusing, but that might be the best way to do it with the new modular structure of DCSW. 2. The Su-25T has an Advanced Flight Model (AFM), that is quite superior to the old Lock-on flight models, especially, as you noted, on the ground. In Flaming Cliffs 3, the Su-25 and A-10A have been given an AFM, and those for the F-15C and Su-27 are in developpement. For the Su-33 and MiG-29, one can only hope. 1 2nd French Fighter Squadron
predavolk Posted January 12, 2014 Author Posted January 12, 2014 (edited) It`s here... :music_whistling: Yeah, that's the general DCS manual. Found that one already. 1. Thanks, those are the answers I was looking for. The LOMAC manual is pretty hefty, I can see why a spiral-bound version was sold! And thanks for the info about the AFM. One of the annoying surprises about the Su-25T was how easy it was to overwhelm the AoA and flip it into a stall. I'm curious how an aircraft like the -27, or even more so, the -33, handles high levels of AoA. I have another related question. It seems that the performance is slightly better in LOMAC. Is that because the simpler flight model is less demanding, or is it just an illusion caused by simpler missions (fewer vehicles)? Edited January 12, 2014 by predavolk
Robin_Hood Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 You might want to be careful with the manuals, though, as they are (pretty much all) somewhat outdated, unfortunately. That is true for the in-game Encyclopedia as well. I'm curious how an aircraft like the -27, or even more so, the -33, handles high levels of AoA. That (stall behaviour of the AFMed F-15C and Su-27) is one of the things everybody is eager to try. :) I have another related question. It seems that the performance is slightly better in LOMAC. Is that because the simpler flight model is less demanding, or is it just an illusion caused by simpler missions (fewer vehicles)? I'm not sure, do you mean LOMAC (released in 2003), or Flaming Cliffs 3? If the former, graphics have been much improved since LOMAC. If the latter, AFM can be a factor I guess, and also higher polygon model if you compare with the Su-33 (still has an old 3D model in the current version - but actually got a new one in the Beta 1.2.7). 2nd French Fighter Squadron
