  1. Yes, that book that the scan came from said that initially flares had worked very effectively against the Redeye missile (And SA-7? Were some captured and used against the Russians?), but in the first three days following the deployment of the Stinger, four Su-25's were shot down. The addition of the armour plate and effective fire extinguishers resulted in a dramatic reduction in losses. In fact, this book said that no more Su-25's were actually shot down by Stingers once the mods were made, although there were several planes that did actually make it back to base, but were write-offs. The book goes on to say that 23 Su25's were lost if Afghanistan (roughly 10% of Soviet fixed wing losses in the conflict, one loss to 2800 combat flight hours) Thats why I complained about lacking fire extinguishers in the previous post. In the past few days I've been making up some Afghanistan type scenarios with the Grach, and Stingers featured prominently. It's so easy for one to clip you and get an engine fire going, and then it's tickets for you. If the fire doesn't go out, and most don't, you have to eject within seconds. Sometimes you can fly with a fire for ages, but normally not. And in any case, you just don't know - so IRL, when you would try and preserve your own life, you would be forced to eject. Which is what I do. And regarding that pilot from the scanned section, I was just asking about the missile shootdowns - the following section, describing how he won the Hero of the Soviet Union award - well, let me just say that he earned it. Absolutely no disrespect was ever intended towards that person.
  2. I get tired of watching them loiter over SAM sites, oblivious to the beeping of the RWR, then reacting with brilliant evasion tactics the millisecond the missile is actually launched. The problem isn't their evasion skills (which are uncannily good sometimes) it's the skill of not getting into that situation in the first place. They should have some sort of situational awareness model, that says 'ok, I got a spike from there, and now it's there. There should be a SAM roughly there then, so best I give that general zone the appropriate respect, and maybe I should fly a bit lower or something...' Something like that. Easier said than done I suppose.
  3. Yes, I thought it was very interesting, and I was hoping somebody would have some more input on that particular event or any more flying stories from the battles there. We tend to have more info on Western conflicts, it would be nice to hear some Russian pilot accounts of the fights they've had. I figured out what happened in the thread though. I was discussing the Topgun reference, and somebody thought I was talking about the text of the scan I posted. Total miscommunication. Ah well, the vagaries of this medium of communication.
  4. On second thoughts, don't answer. I don't know how we got there, I'll just leave it at that.
  5. Ok, thanks. I do have media player 10, and what I thought were fairly recent codecs. Is there some sort of logfile that would have noted what lomac wants?
  6. I started the now closed thread asking for more info on a supposed missile shootdown (the plane shooting the missile!) Then I moaned about no fire extinguishers. Then I had a light hearted go at somebody bringing up the top gun 'hit the brakes and he'll fly right by'. I have no idea what people understood by what I was saying, but it seemed to wander off topic a tad, talking about beheadings. How on earth did we get there?!? I'll go and rest now....
  7. Yes, of course I read it! :) The problem of course is that I've already read the 1000+ posts concerning this debate in the past as well....and this thread is not about 'hitting the brakes and flying right by!'
  8. It's not a very thick book, but here's the cover:
  9. Noooooooooooo! Please don't start that one again!
  10. http://forum.lockon.ru/showthread.php?t=13415
  11. No, I agree. But it's good to know most of us have seen so many rubbish flying movies, don't you think? ;)
  12. Hi, After making a track, and getting the camera angles the way I want, when I select 'Record AVI' from the 'Flight' menu, LO just sends me back to the desktop. What should be happening, and how can I get it right? Thanks
  13. At the bottom of the list on the right....
  14. I have tried that, but it seems a bit random. Actually, I feel like it makes no difference at all, it could just be some bad luck though! But the point is, that we need to have some sort of decision 'event'. In other words, I could follow the logic of - Engine Fire, discharge the bottle, if still on fire after 30 secs discharge other sides bottle, if still on fire, EJECT. Right now it's - Engine Fire, shutdown engine, hmmmm, maybe it will go out, just wait a bit mo..BOOOOOM! Dammit! And anyway, having EGT, ITT, TIT (whatever they want to call it on this one!) alone doesn't make up for the fact that we just don't have functioning extinguishers in this sim! A basic model would do: Pull extinguisher, and there is XX % chance the fire goes out, something like that.
  15. Yes, same for me MBot, exactly so.
  16. And while I'm on it, why can I not put out the fires in my engines at all? I would love to have something like: 1) Get hit by irritating Stinger which often causes an engine fire 2) Option 1: Eject Option 2: Wait around and see if the fire goes out, risking explosive death I've just been reading how the Su25 was upgraded from the initial T8 pre-production models sent to Afghanistan with armour plate between the engines, and most importantly FIRE EXTINGUISHERS! The same goes for the A-10 etc. We need useable extinguishers, then we know, if they didn't work, get out!
  17. Take a look at this scan from a book on the Su25 I have, in particular the bit I drew some rather odd arrows around. Here's a link to it in case I botched this forums attachment util!: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v244/ARM505/Su25Tale1.jpg How on earth did this guy SHOOT DOWN A STINGER, not only once, but twice and using unguided rockets the second time, and cannon the first?!? Surely they wanted to say he shot the guys before they launched? I doubt you could even see the actual missile in flight, let alone shoot it down! CIWS Pavlyukov they called him after that I suppose....I don't buy this story as it's written there, they must have it wrong. Anyone have any clarity on these supposed events?
  18. Motion seconded, does anyone know more about this? No joy with search....
  19. BF2 needs to pass a lot of data over the connection, so no matter the ping, a dialup just won't cut it, sure. LO has a lower total data volume to pass (I would imagine, it can run at 33 dialup settings I assume), but ping, or latency remains as important as always for immediate response. I'll take a line connected at a rock steady 150 ping over a fluctuating 10-200 ping line for flightsims. We don't need to take the insta-kill headshot type shots for sims compared to CS or BF2 as well, hence we can accept higher pings I believe.
  20. Well, it works. Thats got to count for something!
  21. Thanks, coincidentally I had just read that thread the minute before checking this one again! In any case, I didn't seem to have a problem with timeouts, but I did change the settings. Thanks.
  22. And some of us are restricted by a frankly evil, monopolistic and backward telecom company. Yup, thats right, I live in South Africa ;-) Nonetheless, your point is taken, and I will not be playing online in the near future, although a high ping is probably ok as long as it is very constant I suppose. Thats why I would love to have DS software which would mean we would probably get a local server.
  23. As a matter of curiosity, where is the VVS504 server physically located (just a general idea, no specifics needed)?
  24. I don't think the connection featured very heavily in the speed of loading the mission - it said 'waiting for server' for a few seconds at the end, but that was right at the end, and the HDD had been going mad the whole time up till then. Thanks S77th-RYKE for the good tip.
  25. No, but I'm on a 64k ISDN line, hence my question in the recent thread on HPB (High ping...people!) being allowed to join, asking what setting was best for me. I got two different answers, but inclining more towards leaving my setting lower (56k). My pings seemed logical, given that I am almost certainly on the other side of the planet to the server. Any further advice? I realise that I will probably not be able to play online, but I just wanted to check things out, and there was nobody on the server.
