Russian MiG-29 exports to Iraq in the late 1980's
JLZ replied to VTJS17_Fire's topic in Military and Aviation
East Germany and other countries of Warsaw pact have had Export version A. These were better then Export version B. Ukraine was part of Soviet Union so they have full Russian versions. It wasn't just about radar. Complete targeting, navigating and computer systems were downgraded. I can't find citation what was exactly downgraded in technical terms but if you look at what radar/WCS characteristics Russians were constantly developing, one can get idea what was downgraded. These were detection and lock-on ranges, target tracking angles, number of targets that could be tracked at once, ECM resistance, missile guidance (N019M in MiG-29S, 9.13S is capable of guiding 2 missiles to different air threats at a time), CPU, software, weight. As progress has been made, Export version avionics and other accessories become better than that in first versions of Russian MiG29's. But, never as good as Russian actual one's. -

It might be a typo (R-27R1 ... R-27RE1). Later in the book, they refer R-xx1 as export versions) No ECM... -

It was Mig-29, Export version B (9.12B, Serie 5B from Fulcrum-A version) - downgraded N019EB radar and a simplified OEPrNK-29E2 targeting/navigation system. Initially, these were armed with R-60 and R-27R (latter with R-73 an R-27R1, but I don't think Iraqi version were upgraded) -

Nice colors! Lucky shot (if it isn't crop)?! Are you author?

It must be F-16 since you maintain them :) -
I've mentioned compressed air before in posts but it was high pressure nitrogen. I saw 'System filler' and assumed it was part of aircraft accessories but it was connection point?! Sorry about that... Su-27 also uses high-pressure nitrogen for canopy operation and sealing.

You are right. From link that you had provided, at very end of chapter it said: Good to know, thanks

^ ^ Poor guy... For nikolekan and rest of you: MegaLOL PS It's made from watermelon

I don't know for aviation but on the ground, instead of hydraulics pump you could use vacuum booster. We have one in the car that assists braking.

Mikoyan, excellent finding. More their videos: Coldwarair's Channel Cold War Air Museum Web-site If you check their blog you'll see they have SR-71 simulator (not yet operational, though)

It's an F-100? -
a little advice for some cheap pc parts.

If you go for ATI, your power consumption will be lower. You might have problems with drivers and some games but it's solvable. I have MSI Hawk 5770 and it's quite good OCer. Corsair (IMHO) is best PSU maker. They don't have lower quality PSUs although they have their budget line (CX) and their warranty is 5 years. If you need more info: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/power-consumption-overclocking.html http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cases/display/system-wattage.html http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/gpu-power-consumption-2010.html If you need PSU review site: http://www.jonnyguru.com/ http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/ -
Good that you've understood. I always make my explanations complicated. In foreign language it isn't easier too. F-16? I thought we were talking about F-15 (although nobody have mentioned it) :megalol: Concept works. Good. Reporter is hilarious :D (pilot heavy breaths... he put effort to keep aircraft nose up...) Landing gear system is actuated by hydraulic. Emergency LG is pneumatic with backup compressed air containers. Brake system is pneumatic. Emergency Brake system is also pneumatic (2nd line). Sov13t explanation might be correct one. I thought that 'trap landing' requires stronger airframe to maintain structural unity and that mean more cost and that lower number of aircraft and the chutes are cheaper). Drag chutes also have installed backup canister of compressed air.

There is a site which I visit in order to find bargain deals for PC games. Today, I saw list for free, ad-supported or abandoned games. So, here it is. PS AFAIK site and 'owner' is 100% legit but if you have any concerns about it, do check!

You scared him, GGTharos. He understood 'Go' as 'Shoo'. Poor Topol-m...

msvgas, mig29 emergency pump is driven by fuel pressure. What I meant is... When you compress gas you can accumulate it for later use. Compressed gas is hot and in that heat is part of it's energy. So it's very important to preserve that heat bcs you get more energy later. Link Now, I had mentioned that oil is cooled bcs that would be indication that no accumulation of energy in hydraulics is important and that it is wasted in purpose. Basically, it is transfer media and it needs pump to be effective. BTW Hydrozine will last 10-15 minutes according to info from that site (if both engines are out). I suppose it's enough to land plane in emergency? AlphaOneSix, you are right. There are Hydraulic Accumulators in MiG29 also. One for Main and other for Boost line. These are pressurized with nitrogen at 8MPa. I think their effects last only moment bcs needed P is 2.5 times more. (and capacity of accumulators can't be big because there is only 4.5l of oil in system in first place. - wrong) I'm sorry for my English and inability to explain things in proper manner :)

AFAIK hydraulic doesn't accumulate pressure as pneumatic does. Accumulated energy in oil transfers through heat into fuel (which is deliberately used as oil cooling medium) so you need pump to "inject' energy into oil (pressurize it) back. (I'm sorry if I missed some concept. Correct me please) Anyway, emergency topic is on 200th page of MiG29 manual. I read it now but maybe I excluded some more info. To make it short: Both engine flameout - If neither engine relights passing 6 500 ft AGL, an immediate ejection is recommended. 29's have Main and Boost hydraulics and Emergency one (They operate at P from 19Mpa to 22MPa). With Emergency one, only severely degraded aircraft controllability is available (Emergency one operate at P up to 24MPa but with limited delivery rate output). If you regain one hydraulic system - Prepare controlled ejection If you lost all hydraulic pressure - Throttles OFF, Eject These were procedures from flight manual. mvsgas, what is driving that emergency pump (the last) one? I doubt there is enough battery power on aircraft for it's prolonged operation.

Where is the switch for "scan/track-while-scan" modes???
JLZ replied to aap_flanker's topic in Home Cockpits
As far as I observed in game... While in TWS you move radar cursor on target. Then cursor moves together with that target (and radar keep searching for other targets too) until target gets in 85% of selected weapon. Then it switches to STT and you loose others. -
You have accessory gearbox which is responsible for driving all accessories. That gearbox is connected to engine gearbox(es) via clutch(es). By Default right side engine is connected for driving accessories gearbox. If there is 8% RPM more on left side engine then aircraft engages LS engine for driving accessory gearbox. If you loose RPM on one engine, control and power systems continue to work. If you loose both engines you loose all accessories driving power (except battery driven ones). I think that without hydrolics it is very hard if not impossible to maintain control of aircraft and/or land it. If you can't or doesn't have a time to restart engines there is only one solution: eject.

Alternate locations to get Printed KA-50 Manual in the US?
JLZ replied to pclark36's topic in Payment and Activation
Try here. Shipping should be around 5$ but you need to check... -
Also, if you have installed multiple languages and keyboard layouts, try hitting LCTRL+Y instead LCTRL+Z

As far as I read, there is no AC/DC converter but DC/AC PTO only for case if AC generator failed. In case of DC generator failure there are batteries. That's way is important to keep them fully charged... EDIT: Man, I'm always late...
