leroy1964, that happens to me too. Beside that, sometimes while hovering ~80m AGL, AP disengage like I have descended too low. Also, sometimes helicopter starts hard rotation if I forgot to reset trim before engaging hover. I noticed that my chopper stays in (slight) permanent drop if I: had trimmed to one side, with opposite rudder, do correction trim while still in hover, disengage hover and trim again. So, what I do? Press 'Reset trim', few times if needed. That RCtrl+Enter is very helpful. I thought my joystick was faulty but with virtual control visible I saw that game sometimes don't register centered joystick after trim so it keeps attenuating commands.

Personally, I'm with SpeedLink SL-8736 but if you want quality - check Sennheiser I tried few full-ear-coverage models in shop and they are comfortable, have build quality and sounds nice. Even cheap ones are solid ones :D

I'll assume you want to assign collective to the lever of 3D. The name of axis is JOY SLIDER 1. Start game with joystick plugged in, go to Options, Controls, under Category select Axis Commands Under Flight.. Collective and Logi...3D double click, window will open, move lever and it will assign JOY SLIDER 1 to it. I reversed it, so pulling lever to me is for "speed up" Hope I answered right questino :D

Sure thing that 10 minutes is a lot of better :) About OS. There is no laptop and desktop versions of OS. But, you need to collect drivers before action take a place. There is chance that wireless and/or LAN card wouldn't work and than you can't connect to internet. Also, you can try to fix issues with those old programs you have (compatibility mode, patches, updates etc.).
