This would actually be pretty amazing if they could pull this off.

Hey all, I wanted to open a thread to start a discussion about the many different detection systems used to detect aircraft. I am interested in learning more about how these systems work and the advantages and disadvantages of each. I am especially interested in learning more about FLIR, IRST, and Electro-Optical systems. Maybe I am not looking hard enough, but I do not understand the differences associated with these systems. I guess I can start by expressing my knowledge on the subject and what I know about these various different systems. If I have something incorrect or mixed up, please politely correct me. First, there are mainly two different types of Detection Systems. There are Passive systems that do not produce any emissions and active systems in which do produce emissions. Because of this, with passive systems you will not be able to pick up on any incoming emissions from the detection system itself where as active systems it is possible to pick up on the detection system's emissions. Ex. of Passive Systems include: - Infrared Search & Track (IRST) - Electro-Optical - Foreward Looking Infrared (FLIR) - Radar Warning Receiver (RWR) Ex. of Active Systems include: - Radio Detection and Ranging (RADAR) (I heard the F-35 has passive Radar, how might that work?) The most common and effective way to detect and track an aircraft is by Radar. Radar - Radio waves are sent out and reflected back to the radar when encountering an object allowing the Radar to calculate the objects location, aspect, speed and altitude - As soon as a radar is turned on, a target equipped with an RWR can pickup on incoming radar emissions IRST - Picks up on an aircraft's heat signature (How? not entirely sure) Electro Optical -detects objects by powerful optics and a computer system differentiating the pixels ( I think) FLIR (Do not know how this differs from IRST) RWR -Picks up on incoming radio waves from RADARs

How did you end up bypassing the Gear VR home screen? I'm having this same problem. Every time I plug it up, it goes directly to the home screen. EDIT: Okay, I managed to get it to work. I have a Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge. In order to get pass the Samsung VR software you simply can't let the connector on the headset connect to the phone's micro usb. I avoided this proble by pushing the usb connecter on the headset to the large size "position A" so that the usb pins won't actually connect to the phone. As a first Impression here are my Pros and Cons after about 10mins of play. Pros: -Has a lot of potential for a cheaper replacement to the oculus rift - Has really nice graphics in the Ultra setting, however, even then some gauges are a bit blurry to me Cons: -Because I had to ensure the phone didn't connect to the micro usb on the gear VR, it wasn't secure in the headset and moved around a bit -Possibly because phone wasn't secure, the head position in game wasn't calibrated correctly (if I looked forward, it wouldn't be looking directly forward in game) -Motion Sickness ( I do not own track ir and I am not used to using my head to look around in game, also because of the lag and poor quality picture.) - As mentioned earlier in the thread, there is no 3d depth -Graphics aren't crisp (Some of the guages and are blurry to me) - Phone can get hot over a long period of use Conclusion: While I may have listed a lot more cons than pros, I strongly do believe that apps like this in the future will make virtual reality cheap and feasible for everyone to enjoy. I believe the motion sickness would be far less if I was streaming from a usb and the head position was calibrated better. This may be fixed after some more tweaking. If this app was made specifically for the Samsung VR and was avialable in the Oculus store, it could work a lot more fluidly. For one, I would not have to bypass the Gear VR menu. Two, I would be able to stream using usb. Three, I am sure you would be able to get a crisp 3d depth working And Four, I would be able to use the headset buttons to control the mouse in game. Ideal for clicking buttons in the cockpit. In conclusion, I feel that as the technology progresses and more apps become available, this may be an ideal solution for VR gaming. These are just my first thoughts on this, and I too will do tweaking as there may be fixes to all of the cons I have listed above.

Dovetail Games new Flight Simulator https://fsxinsider.com/dovetail-games-flight-simulator-announced-at-gamescom-2015/ http://www.dovetailgames.com/news/2015/aug/4/dovetail-games-looks-to-the-future-collaborating-with-microsoft I know this may be old news to some of you all. It is about time we see a good new flight simulator arrive on the market though. I hope to see improved physics, collision detection, and of course graphics. Also I hope they don't overlook the need for a good net code to fly close formation.

Web Dev looking to get in to the code that drives the physics
KillarZ replied to hvent's topic in DCS Modding

I think that may be a fairly strong starting point. After that I would just read through some of the other threads and nitpick the information. Good Luck man. I'm trying to learn as well, the only difference is I have very little coding experience. This should change in the near future. Nice site you have by the way. -
You really think I need a better PSU or different GPU? I haven't looked too much into it, but I don't see a card that can perform better within the same price range.
-
I wasn't nearly as focused on DCS World 2 as it may seem. I was curious to know specifically how you think the graphics card and process would hold up for DCS as it currently stands. However, if anyone had any idea or guesstimate on how it would run on DCS World 2 than I wouldn't mind hearing that opinion too. But my focus was on how well do you think a build like this can perform in DCS world as it is now. Interested in hearing rough ideas and possibly advice specifically on the graphics card and processor from people who may have had similar hardware.

Just playing around with PC builds. Curious to know your thoughts on how well something like this would run DCS. What's your expected FPS on your expected settings? I know it's not out yet but how well do you think it will do when DCS World 2 is out? http://pcpartpicker.com/p/C8mhXL

Thank you so much. The scale was the issue. Although, I'm not sure why that would be an issue. I made my model to scale in meters. The texture wasn't a problem, I only used it for it's convenience. Thanks again.

After playing around with the model and model viewer, I managed to get some more of the model to show up. However, I have no clue how and why this happened and I am still missing the front portion of my model.

Hey everybody, I am having trouble seeing my whole model in model viewer. I am simply just testing out to see if I can get an object into DCS world as a beginner step into modding. When I use model viewer I can't seem to see my whole model. I have applied a single material across my whole model, and placed the route bitmap file into the model viewer's temp textures folder, but get this issue when trying to load into model viewer. I attached some screenshots to show you all what I mean. I am sure there is a really simple step I am overlooking, but I've been trying to solve this issue for a couple days now. Any ideas? Thanks.

Thank you for sharing. Amazing read.

Thank you. With that being said, I have strong faith that it can be done and within 10-15 years, someone will have it done and it may not be ED. I know ED is a small company and they are busy and wrapped up in getting their sim together, but I strongly believe that ED should start making moves to somehow develop or get someone else to develop a new game, sound, and World Engine that will use future computing technologies. Then again, I don't know all the technological and financial barriers ED would need to surpass to pull something like this off. But like I said, if ED doesn't do it, someone will. Now with all that said, it would be wonderful to fly around above the World's most beautiful cities and locations. Along with this, it'll be interesting to see the infinite amount of hypothetical and historical missions that can come along with something like this. A World terrain Engine would probably also take FSX and X-plane out the market making DCS the primary go-to flight simulator. Kind of an off topic subject, but why would it be a technical challenge to integrate DCS World into Outerra?
-
What I want to know is... We always here about the ED development team being located in Moscow, but is there a team somewhere in the US or any other locations? Isn't Wags in the US? Just curious.

Really amazing footage of the F-22 raptor demo at SF Fleet Week. And bonus in cockpit footage of the F-16 during the heritage flight demo with the F-22 and P-51. Amazing video. Growing up, I went to the fleet week airshow every year. It sucks that the year they brought F-22 out I had to take the SAT, so I missed this show:(. But an amazing video. EDIT: Can't seem to embed the video. Am I doing something wrong? EDIT 2: Thanks Namenlos Ein
