Any video with aerial refueling, e.g. in the next Episod V or VI? I'm actually ready 😁!

That's those new WiFi refueling baskets. When you turn it on. You only need to be within WiFi range of the tanker and you'll receive fuel.

Just in case anyone hasn't seen the post on the unofficial roadmap thread, some new images of the Kola map. First posted on Facebook, but later a user reposted them on their Discord:

    56BA6F79-C59F-4D6A-81F4-2C26D555983C.jpg

One thing I'd note here is that the mountain looks quite low detailed. It's a low resolution image to start with (Facebook won't help with that either due to how it compresses files) and it looks like there's sme depth of field going on, but even so it does look quite rough.

Note that this appears to show an area around Bodø Main Air Station, looking north-west from just past the eastern extremity of the airbase.

Note that the museum appears to be missing, but this could possibly be intentional to better represent the map at an earlier point in time. One thing I'd draw attention to is the radome, which looks like the exact thing (AN/FPS-129 HAVE STARE, better known as GLOBUS II) stationed at Vardø Defence Station, on the eastern extremity of Vardøya. This is primarily for intelligence gathering on Russian ballistic missiles and for tracking launches out of Plesetsk).

There is a radar where the radome is in the screenshot, but it's likely an ASR and is next to what looks like a control tower (though for what seems to be a vehicle garage) and is quite a bit smaller than the GLOBUS II. There is another radome present on the base itself, at what some sources refer to as an EWR station, though note that immediately to the west looks strikingly like a HAWK site, albeit configured as a platoon (3 launchers + 1 HPIR) instead of a battery (which would have 6 launchers and 2 HPIRs).

Probably not something people will care too much about, but I thought I'd mention this in case anyone is interested.

According to Orbx CEO the ground textures just can't be improved until stuff in DCS core is improved as there is a max texture size. They also want to expand the map. But again, this is apparently max you can get with that level of detail until DCS core gets some sort of upgrade.

I decided to go with stand alone instead of Steam. I was new and didn't understand Steam. Now I have the Quest 3 and I have been wanting to try the mixed reality with my cockpit set up. However, I have not been able to find a way to do that with stand alone. Every video I find talks about going through Steam.

DCS is now open xr default.

    I don't have Q3 or stand alone.

But i would think it's as easy as starting your Q3 and have it connected to your PC(wired or wireless)

Then go into DCS. go into the settings and go to VR and simply check the box that says run in vr or something. Save and DCS should restart in VR mode.

  4. Giving the C7 to the mud hen would really make it a BVR monster. With its excellent air to air radar.

Probably only the Tiffy would surpass it with the Meteor missiles.

The F-16 with C7 would also be very interesting. After the radar modeling improvement to the F16. You can under ideal circumstances (very big or very fast or very big and very fast, coming in hot) pick up target at around 90nm(Tu-22M as a target) However. Even going M1.5, at 45k feet. You'll not be able to launch until around 50nm because of battery life and expect a hit. My understanding is that under ideal conditions the C7 has a range of about 70nm. That would be interesting.

Not necessarily true. It probably depends on your ISP. I get four times the DL speed on standalone compared to Steam and MSFS. emoji6.png

Dosnt matter what connection you have for MSFS. Because it download and unpacks and install at the same time. Which slows it to a crawl. It downloads a tiny fraction, then unpacks it and install that before moving on. And the unpacking and installation seems unaffected by download speed or the speed of your SSD/M2. I have like 20 hours in MSFS and like 12 of those are just download/install time.

    Hear hear!

In DCS power loss from supercharger throttling seems to be either not simulated all that deeply, or, more likely, one has to look really hard for a rare and ugly combination of input parameters to make it anywhere close to that "up to 300 BHP" and start noticing some sort of a really meaningful difference in performance.

Below are screens taken in Caucasus free flight mission. Test goal - get the engine up to about 46" MAP at about 1500 ft using a) full supercharger and no turbo, and b) lots of turbo and only a little supercharger (so little in fact, that landing light warning came on, note the positions of levers). I'm sure the engine shouldn't like nasty supercharger throttling in the latter case, but from airspeed point of view there was no difference whatsoever (well, maybe +/- 2 kts 'cause it's difficult to keep the -47 flying level and steady).

Repeated the test at 8000 ft, aiming at 52" MAP this time, with various combinations of both levers, added interlinked combo, all with same results - no speed difference beyond margin of error.

All and all, to me It doesn't seem to be worth it - fiddling with levers separately I mean. I'm not seeing noticeable performance penalty (if any) for flying interlinked all the time. OK, there is one "inconvenience" penalty rather than performance one - turbo lag with resulting MAP getting bipolar disorder at low altitudes 😉 . For this reason I sometimes do like flying with split levers, as the throttle alone has more linear and predictable output. Nicer to manage and can be supplemented with boost later I admit. More often, however, I just interlink them and call it a day. The plane will fly equally fast anyway. Granted, level speed is not everything and I suppose there might be some other "drawback" simulation running in the background, but unless one flies Reflected's campaigns or some really long missions, it's probably not a big factor.

    2 Screen_240422_215625.jpg

Would be interesting to read a book by a real plot in what they actually did. None of the P47 war memories I've read go into such detail.

On the other hand it seems real pilots mostly just floored it until the combat was over. And did stuff to the engine that would kill it in seconds in DCS.

Download speeds for stand alone are fine though lately. Don‘t know if that applies universally, but I really can’t complain.

I had that in the past when on patch day ED servers choked, but not for the last couple of patches.

I have no statistical evidence. But seems that there more corrupt and problem patching on stand alone than steam.

And it is hard to judge if its the ED updater or just terrible American internet coverage when people complain about slow downloads.

But steam is known for having the fastest downloads in gaming.

40gb patches takes me a few minutes. And even a full download of DCS(which for me now is 600gb)  takes like 30-40 minutes.

And I also like having steam telling me how much DCS I've played total and last two weeks. I'm coming up to 1000 hours soon. But that has no real benefit, except I find it interesting.

I have gotten bored with the Channel and Normandy Maps. Long flights times over the channel and flat featureless flat terrain that pretty much looks the same.

I am now using the Syria Map and the Island of Cyprus.  The Island of Cyprus terrain resembles Crete, North Africa and Sicily. Flight times are much shorter, more interesting, and I get that feel for WWII in the Mediterranean Theater.

I sometimes use the Persian Gulf Map. A great place for a North Africa experience. Chasing Rommel in the deserts of interior Iran.

You can use South Atlantic map and the upcoming Kola for ww2 stuff.

Both Corsair and Hellcat flew over Norway. And Mossie did attacks in the fjords.

No, DCS offers no logistics short of an ETA model on shipment of weapons from one warehouse to another that you control by a speed setting in the ME.

Helos can pick up and move a handful of objects via sling, but that's not really logistics, as it isn't inventory, it's just an object with a weight set in the ME (yes, you can make the slingable objects whatever weight you want; just be sure to check it when using them, as by default... they're insanely overweight).

CTLD, a script from the community, is the only thing that makes this helo serve a purpose [as of, and up to, Spring 2024].

For the record; I'm not against it; I'm a fan of the Yak ... I wish I had a reason to fly it more (I wish it would be ... finished. It's literally the "most simple" module in the entire game, and despite being 6 years old now, is still Early Access.) Meanwhile, the CEii from Magnitude/Leather/whoever you want to call them, is also in EA nightmare with bugs left and right...
I want to enjoy these modules; and I was massively looking forward to the A-29, but it seems that's no longer happening.

The issue is DCS and ED and their third parties' ability to finish these modules; it doesn't seem anything is giving them a reason to actually "complete" them.

The no-boom is boring in the case of the CH47 is that as it stands; DCS is offering a serious "war machine," but it's incapable of doing ... what it's capable of doing.

Meanwhile they're talking about it being able to A2A refuel; and not a single picture shown off shows one with a refuel probe. About it being crewed by several people; and yet not a single mention of it being multicrew. The tease two years ago was a different model entirely. The tease video shows mods; and not even their own content, to make things even more confusing for the public.

I'd love for this module to be what it should be in DCS; but, ED has yet to show us any of that.

And yes, trust me, I love helos as much as the next person, and absolutely will buy the Kiowa; but only for two reasons: 1. It won't be EA. 2. It can serve a function in DCS outside of free roaming.

Neat cockpit in this thing; but.. last neat cockpit from ED was the A10Cii, and it took 4 years for them to make a radio for that thing..... just saying.

Is it likely to be better flight wise than any other version in other flight sims? Yes... most likely. But there's also no mention of normal things to expect in DCS; no mention of multicrew, no mention of what the FMS will even be capable of; since we're all well aware DCS has zero navaids; and a broken ILS system still at that.

If, for you the reader, this is to "replace" a CH47 in other flight sims (or in place of said CH47s in other sims as you waited out for this one), just because it's near and dear to your heart though... I'm all for it; I can't wait to hear it flying around... because it is a wicked machine.

But as far as DCS' ecosystem goes.... be extremely careful of where you're setting your expectations.

ED having butterfly syndrome when it comes to finishing their products is well know. Just ask any of us that fly WW2 DCS.

I'll use the Chinnock the same way as I've used the Huey. Doing troop transport in and out of hot LZs or Medivac under fire.

The difference is that unlike the Huey the Chinnock actually did this in a modern combat environment. It fits great into Syria map, it will fit perfectly into Afghanistan and Iraq maps.

I would rather have a full fidelity blackhawk that let's me drop soldiers by rope or do Medivacs.

But Chinnock is still far more useful for this vs Huey. Huey will come into it's own with Vietnam map(which I hope will lead to a Huey face lift) or on the central Europe cold war map that may or may not have been teased in the Chinnock trailer.

    Got any recommendations for books?

As others have stated though, I am also getting tired/sour of the pre purchase stuff. Did it once with the F-15E and it still doesn't have a datalink among other things. Never again. Well I did it with SA map too but that's like 10 minutes of flying it and it grew old.

Just drop a well enough functioning module/map, with a short enough roadmap, and people will buy.

This one. Of all the dozens upon dozens aviation books I've read/listened too. No other book has impressed me more in pure fly skill.

And this one is excellent, very good self-deprecating humour.

Good catch, I don't think anyone pointed that out yet!

I only ever crossed that border through the official checkpoints as a child and am certainly not a historian, but it does indeed look like the inner-German border aka the iron curtain. Together with Wags' recent hint at two "green" maps, one of which he specifically said would make the community very happy, I am getting my hopes up for a bit of a Fulda gap map. 😉

Then again, maybe some kind of DMZ in one of Afghanistan's green zones?

I would love for a cold war map. I think it's a bit of a waste that Sinai was modern. Same with Kola.

Historic maps that match a conflict or a period further back seems much more useful since the full earth map will cover current stuff anyway.

i thought it was a US based Ch47F? i looked at the US army 2011 manual. It says either M60D or M240H machineguns can be used, so i do hope that just because ED said its a "2007" Ch47F does not mean its only limited to the M60 door guns.

Yes, I'm saying if the brits used the M60 on their Hooks even through they normally don't even have that weapon in their inventory. Then there's probably a reason both the Americans and brits used them on the hooks so long.

Army helicopters strangely do "farm" work, or general humanitarian work. I've seen Blackhawks guide animals to their gates, Chinooks drop hay bales, etc. I believe it's mainly NG doing that

That's actually an excellent way to get flight time and hone skills.

Instead of just burning taxpayer bought fuel to get flight hours. They help while getting training.

  13. To make close air support or similar missions in DCS. You have to do all kinda stuff to make battles last longer. Use immortal, triggers to AI off etc

But I would like an ME setting were ground units are immortal from other ground units. But not aircraft.

That way the AI can fight it out as long as you want.

And you can simply use 1 trigger were if enemy units are within a trigger zone. The defender die.

Also I'm unsure if this is an option. But if not. The ability to give ground units infinite ammo.

In the trailer the ch47f was only shown m60 door guns. Do chinooks not use m240's in the 21st century?

The British ones as late as 2007 used M60s or Miniguns. Which is odd as M60s were never a gun used by the British in an infantry capacity but the FN MAG was.

I'd like to have an AI crew chief who can give verbal call outs over the ICS.

After having read David Burnett's book Making a Night Stalker I realized the extent of what Chinook chiefs do during flight ops and I'd like to see(hear) these call outs in DCS as well. Obviously the book is about SOF Chinooks but chiefs in the regular army do very similar things as well.

    Making a Night Stalker.jpg

Same is true for the Huey.

Reading books about Vietnam War. The crew chief and M60 gunner would call out obstacles, trees. When troops are off or on.

With the proliferation of FFB devices, mostly thanks to Walmis with VPForce Rhino, there was the talks of creating FFB rudder pedals.

IIRC, the kit for MFG rudder pedals will be available soon, but from what the devs are saying DCS does not support FFB effects on the Rudder axis, only for Pitch/Roll.

Main use case would be to support anti-torque pedals trimming for the helos that support it, but also to offload some of the haptic feedback to the pedals as well.

I have searched the thread, didn't found another thread so I'm making this one. Please, take this into consideration, folks with FFB pedals will be really happy and by the looks of it, there'll be more and more of them.

Yes please, I have FFB stick, sadly the FFB effects are completely modual dependent. ED made warbirds do not have very good FFB.  While F14 and Viggen has great.

I have MFG pedals, so will definitely get a FFB kit for them.

As mentioned we have to comply with steams preorder rules, at this time it is not possible.

What exactly are those rules? And why didn't they apply to the Apache or Mossie?

Aside from limited "defensive" capabilities the Chinook effectively removes the "C" from DCS.  If I just want to experience the flight characteristics there in another flight sim that has more varied terrain and aircraft.  Trainers and trash-haulers just don't do it for me in DCS.

As far as I know that other flight sim. Won't let you land troops on the roof of a building while machine gun fire and RPGs come towards you.

Steam allows pre order and always have. The  Apache, Hind, Mossie are all recent modules that have been in pre order on steam from DCS
