How to land F-4E on speed and butter it——my experience
wjmzwx replied to wjmzwx's topic in DCS: F-4E Phantom
Maybe just maybe,u can edit or “translate” it into more accurate English for others to interpret it better. And yeah I have 7000hours on DCS which is definitely longer than the time I spend on learning English. -
How to land F-4E on speed and butter it——my experience

Thanks for sharing. Yeah, focus transition is important before touchdown. Groundeffect can decrease decent rate,I think its enough for a jester happy landing. A flare stick movement is for keeping AOA on speed, but if u dont do anything it wont affact the actual touchdown significantly since decent rate is already decreased by groundeffect. -
First, just do the overhead turn at 350-400knots. This part is normal. Just dont make it too tight. Then, let’s split downwind part into 2phases. Phase 1. 180-190knots and try to get level flight. Don’t slow down too much. 180-190knots will give u plenty of lift to get level easily. Phase2. That’s the tricky part. U need to hold the nose Steady and slow down to on speed aoa. Aoa can be affected by 2 factors, throttle and trim. When u push up the throttle aoa will decrease. When u move ur throttle back aoa will increase. So u need to hold ur nose steady to tell which part u need to change: if nose goes down or up then aoa is mostly changed by trim. U need to trim ur plane out. If nose is steady but aoa is changed then u need to move ur throttle. Before the base turn u need to find that balance of throttle and trim—— nose steady and aoa on speed. During the base turn, u can still use this method to keep on speed aoa or fly slightly fast. When u finally on the final approach, u need to firstly aim for a proper decent rate. dont rush to get on perfect aoa again. Ur trim is ok don’t change that too much since u already trimmed out during downwind. Slowly move throttle to get aoa on speed. The method stay the same. If nose is not steady and aoa is not on speed , do trimming. If nose is steady and aoa is not on speed, do ur left hand job. When u are 50ft above the runway, flare.( at this point aoa will decrease since the ground effect. U can use that as a sign of flare moment.) If u don’t feel the ground effect, it’s probably because decent rate is too high, ur plane punches through the ground effect and smashes into runway. CHANGE UR GLIDE SLOPE NEXT TIME. If u feel the ground effect, u need To throttle back slowly now. Otherwise, u will balloon up and land long. But don’t move it too fast or hold back stick too much, don’t go beyond on speed aoa. Do it this way , u don’t need to go in fast and still can make ur backseat ugly guy scream and admire u. Hopefully, this method can help someone who love f-4 but hate jester’s mean landing comments.

a stupid question maybe I find that if i want to limit my groove time in 15-18s I have to line up in 0.5 or 0.6 nm (tacan distance on hud). If I line up in0.7-0.8 groove time will be too long. But we should line up in3/4 nm right? So how can I line up in3/4nm and limit groove time in 15-17….. just do a math Lets Assume the plane is traveling in 140 ias no wind and ground speed is 140too. The plane will fly 2.3 nm per minute. That means in15s it will travel 0.58nm. In18s it will travel 0.69nm. But 3/4nm is 0.75 right? In practice, mother is moving and wind is blowing and in descending 140 ias means slower gs. so Hornets will never approach in 140relative ground speed. And it sometimes doesn’t fly as fast as 140 maybe 135. So if we line up in 0.75 as standard, we are likely end up in 20s groove time….. Can anyone share some experience or tell me what’s my mistake?

When I use mark points in ag mode. tgp can only steer at mark points, cannot back to stp1 2 3 4 … stuck with 25-30. but in nav mode it wont happen. Is this normal?

it may have somthing to do with msaa. When I use TAA,no such thing happens.

When I look backward, fps always drops about 10-20. No other modules behave this way. Even I try to limit max fps to 30,it drops to 10 for few seconds. 60 to 40 or50. 100 to80or90. I wonder if it‘s because it has to load wso seat. This is killing me when dogfight. R5800x 48g ram amd6900xt

I just bought Dcs:Afghanistan on steam. And I found 3 new DLCs in my acount: Dcs:Afganistan Dcs:Afghanistan Base Dcs :Southwest Afganistan. And I have to check all three of them to get download process begin. If I only check Dcs:Afganistan, nothing happens. Is it normal? Should it be this way?

Thanks for always reply so quickly! Surely find the love of feelings with HB team. Now I understand!

I just wonder that if Jester‘s comments of my landings are related to FPM of landings or Gs he feels. For example 1-1.3G he feels good.1.3-1.7G he loses his love of feeling,2G he has hard ass. Or Can we know the standard of each comment? What is good landing for him according to what.

Now the spool time is fixed, any tricks to AAR?

Try to use the left wing or right wing if u like of tanker as reference since the PDl lights are not very good at telling u your rate of forward or backward, it can only tell u the position. U may over or under react on the position changing. But wings on the other hand can give u very good visual signal of rate changing. When I use PDL maybe 10 contacts a full tank, but when I use Wing I always one time top off. I think IRL PDL is good because you can feel the movement rate by your ass or back, but in the 2D sim,my body tells me nothing only eyes. PDL alone is not a very useful visual refernece. Just like chasing papi lights without checking the descent rate, all of a sudden u overshoot. -
Really helpful guys! This module and your answers make me more interested in the history and variants of F-4.

I find that approach a little fast and make AOA lower to 16 or17 ,then in the flare pitch more to on speed can make field landing easier. It makes me wonder, what is like when this beast is used on carrier. Do pilots try to maintain on speed all the time? Or do they try to land with a little nose down. (A lot of Rios may retire bscause of disability or too short to sit in a jet)
