http://www.dwvac.com/ I've found it well worth the US$18. Just make sure your mic or soundcard can filter out any background noise. I use my webcam's mic and this works perfectly when the house is quiet. But when my wife is watching TV, forget it!

I've posted Wags' profile and mine here: http://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=1153314&postcount=3

Just happened to me taking off from Beslan in a free flight mission. NWS disengaged at 70kts, doing about 100 kts and bang, there goes the nose gear.

where do they hide the TrackIR profiles?
latearrival replied to rss0900's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
TrackIR profiles for A10C There's a Track IR profile posted in this thread: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=64447&highlight=wags+trackir And I've attached my profile too. Just unzip and add the XML file to C:\Program Files (x86)\NaturalPoint\TrackIR5\Profiles\ You might want to try both profiles, see which one you prefer and then tweak to your liking. Good luck! It would be great if you could notify us of planned/unplanned forum outages via your Twitter feed. The forum seems to have been down a bit recently and I'm never sure whether to keep hitting Refresh or whether the site is going to be down for hours.

Blimey, it must have been expensive to have the whole manual laminated ;)
-
That sounds just a bit harsh. IMHO it's not always about being too lazy to read the manual. For example, by the time I've finished work, got the kids in bed and had dinner/talked to the wife, I have about 90 minutes of time before bed, about 3 nights a week, to fly and read the manual. If I was to attempt to follow StrongHarm's learning technique, it'd take me 5 months to get just 100 hours of study in. What amazes me is not that some of us haven't RTFM back-to-back, but that so many have the time to do so. Thankfully there are so many great people in this community that are willing to share their knowledge with those of us whose PC time is limited.

For anyone that's interested in this book, I just ordered mine from http://www.bookdepository.com for under US$9 with free shipping! (http://bit.ly/e5JQLM)
-
You can evaluate it for free for 30 days, then it costs US$18. Given how much we all spend on HOTAS, TrackIR, Touchscreens, PC upgrades etc, it seems like a small price to pay for a better Radio experience.
-
ED: can you tell us what MTBF you are using for the CADC so that we can compare this to our experiences? It might be a bug after all.
-
+1 I just bought VAC too (http://www.dwvac.com/) and I think it's perfect for maintaining my sense of immersion. I always found it a bit jarring to use the F keys to 'talk'.

Got it. Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions, paulrkiii
-
But what is the purpose of a chop check/test Thanks Paulrkiii and the 25th VFS for the excellent checklists. I've learned a lot. I've got a few more questions about the Chop Check as there's no mention of "Chop" in the manual, no mention of it in the DCSWiki, and Google just brings up pages about valves and pneumatic pumps! 1. Why is a Chop Check (steps 18 & 19 in the 25th VFS start up checklist) performed? What is it designed to test for exactly? 2. Is the procedure to move the throttle from idle to max and back to idle in 2 seconds, or to move it from idle to max in 2 seconds? 3. Why is this test done one engine at a time? Can the check be performed on both engines simultaneously? 4. Does the sim ever simulate the situation where there is residual fuel that needs to be purged? Or is this step always unnecessary in this particular sim? Cheers!

Just click on the link and then add the missing ) to the end of the URL. Sorry I can't help you any more than this.
-
The link doesn't work because the final bracket is somehow being dropped from the URL. Just add the bracket manually in your browser or just go to http://www.dcswiki.com and search for "Fuel system control panel (A-10)"
-
Sorry, try: http://www.dcswiki.com/index.php?title=Fuel_system_control_panel_(A-10) And I just updated my first post with a little bit more info.
-
Hi Inseckt, I'm not terribly well qualified to answer your questions, but try here: http://www.dcswiki.com/index.php?title=Fuel_system_(A-10) I've found the DCS Wiki an excellent place to fill in the (huge) gaps in my knowledge. However, my understanding is that the Tank Gate switch allows fuel to 'slosh' between the L and R tanks & that it should be closed when refuelling. The Cross Feed switch allows L tank to feed fuel to the R engine and vice versa. If your external tanks aren't being filled, have you tried the four "Fill Disable" switches on the Fuel System Control Panel? DCS Wiki says "Beneath the air refueling controls are four "circuit breaker-like" controls. These appear similar to buttons, but will pop out once selected. When each button is popped out, the refueling line to the corresponding fuel tank will be closed. This can be used to prevent air refueling to a specific fuel tank (for example, if it has been damaged in battle)". Good luck!

Communicating with ground crew via radio

That explains it. I was sitting at the beginning of the runway when I was playing with the radios. Thank you! -
Communicating with ground crew via radio
latearrival replied to latearrival's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
Thanks lobo**, StrongHarm, WarriorX. I really appreciate your help. @lobo** - To use the intercom, I'd have to use the Hot Mic switch, right? (as well as have the INT switch selected and the Rotary Dial set to INT on the Intercom Control Panel I think). I'm not using the Hot Mic switch, I'm using the VHF/UHF transmit switches. @StrongHarm, @WarriorX - my problem seems to be that it's too easy to communicate with the ground crew, not too hard - doesn't seem to matter what frequency the radios are on, and I don't have to use the Hot Mic either. I think I'll just chalk it up to being a little buggy. One more thing though - should I hear the ground crew (and anyone else I communicate with - but I've only tried with the ground crew so far) or do you just get "copy" etc in text at the top of the screen? I can never hear the ground crew speak to me. Cheers! -
Hi! I'm an absolute beginner to all this and I'm just trying to learn how to use the radios (with 'Radio Assists' off). I've RTFM and, thanks to WarriorX's excellent guide to radios, I thought I'd grasped the basics. However, I would really appreciate a little help... I'm sitting idle on the runway in mission "Free flight - Black Sea - Runway" and I thought I'd try using the AM radio to communicate with the Ground Crew. With the radio set to MAN, no matter what frequency the AM radio is set to, I am always able to communicate with (and get a response from) the ground crew. In fact, if I press the Mic Switch for any of the radios, I seem to be able to interact with the ground crew. How is that? While I was able to read and hear my transmission, the response was only displayed on the screen and not spoken. Is that the way it is with all radio comms? Cheers!

Here's a Co-Pilot to read checklists
latearrival replied to StrongHarm's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
Thanks StrongHarm, I'm using 2.5.0, but I'll try replacing ".." with "." and see how I go. -

Strongharm, thank you so much for this. It's a brilliant idea; great for someone like me that's just getting started. And I love the idea of using VAC for the radio too - I find it jarring to have to use the F keys to 'talk'. I was wondering if you have any advice for me - I am testing your VAC profile from within the VAC Builder but VAC won't recognise me saying "check" at the end of the phrase. Having done a bit of testing by setting up my own phrases, VAC doesn't seem to recognise any word in an activation phrase that follows "..". One full stop is no problem, but two and VAC seems to stop listening. Is there a reason you used ".." rather than "."? Is there some sort of config setting that tells VAC that ".." means pause? Cheers! -
Is a touchscreen monitor a good idea?

@CBR9 Thanks for taking the time to share the update with us. Good luck with getting it all up and running to your liking. -

Hey CBR9, how did you go with the new HP touchscreen?
