50% of Georgia is forest, and there are woodland areas on the coast and in the center of the country (nothing in the Surami range is above the treeline). I only see trees in the detailed village areas, with bare textures connecting them. But maybe it's because of my graphics settings. They might not see through trees, that's still not confirmed, but they know exactly where you are after a shot. Even if you are a sniper and 300-400 meters away. They can see you clearly without a scope. I need my slienced sniper rifle!
You're talking to the manic ArmA AI tester.
Once you alert the AI, their eyes get incredibly good, but they have to have line of sight. And it almost always takes two shots at 300m because the first alerts them, then they look in the direction of the sound and see you. If you stay completely behind a bush, you can fire entire clips of ammo and they won't know your exact location. And that is very, very confirmed.

That's not remotely true.
The Iraqi tanks were dumbed down exports and cheap knockoffs, without proper optics, reactive armor or countermeasures, utterly blinded in the sand storm conditions. And while the Republican Guard had many hardened soldiers, even those who trumpet the glory of the American victory speak at length on the inferior training of the tank crews. I would link an entire book-length study, but Scribd unfortunately just whacked it for copyright, along with the RHA estimate tables (noooooo).
I do agree with you that airpower won the war, of course. Just not before the Abrams proved itself. Not against its likely Russian competitors, but in a furious combat environment, and against the best American anti-tank weapons (upgraded sabot and maverick) in friendly fire incidents.

Arma's trees aren't perfect either.
ArmA's trees fade out to LoD pretty fast, which would be just fine and dandy in DCS. Also, once they stop rendering entirely (at like 4000m), the ground texture at that distance mimics the appearance of heavy forest, which is something DCS doesn't do so well.
Another thing I have notice that I could be hiding by a bush and a guy 300-400 meters away will be able to see me as if the bush is see-through.The AI doesn't see through bushes in ArmA, and the LoD at distance tends to hide your from human eyes better than the detailed model up close.
But I don't think anyone wants infantry simulator detail; that wouldn't be reasonable. It's just that LOMAC had more trees than DCS.

The barrel-launched ATGM is a Abrams killer on paper, though. If a tank is going to sit around in place for the enormous amount of time it takes for a slow missile to cover 6km, it DESERVES to get blown up. And if the T-90 is actually in range of the Abrams' gun, it is going to get hit multiple times while it sits motionless, guiding that slow missile.
The truly fearsome weapon is the Ukrainian fire-and-forget top-attack barrel-launched ATGM for the T-80. That's a nightmare.
-
Yeah, I've been struggling with this too. The videos say to enable volley mode with Lctrl Space, but this doesn't work for me.
I get both pylons flashing when I have the missile locked, but as soon as I fire one, the other pylon goes dark. And then there is a long cooldown time before the next missile can be launched, which is infuriating when my first Vikhr sails into the ground for no reason.
-
The T-90 fails pretty hard on the strategic scale, given that there are so few of them. But Russia is never going to fight American armor anyways, so the added protection against portable AT weapons and ATGMs should do nicely.
And on paper, the T-90 has an ATGM that can strike at Western tanks from beyond the range of their guns.

That campaign really loves its Kh-29s, and actually hitting with the second one is a bitch.
I've been experimenting, but still can't figure it out. Could someone post the sequence of buttons they use to stabilize an unbalanced aircraft after firing, so that they don't end up with the autopilot trimming the hell out of your plane after you disengage it?
-
I get that too. I supposed the textures are just some part of FC2 that didn't ship with DCS World for whatever reason.
-
Are these latest builds going to start taking the form of patches, or will there be more complete reinstalls?
-
So is there a randomized chance that a Vikhr will simply never take the laser and just fire into the ground? This has happened a number of times, in a textbook dive at 7km or so, with the laser on, the target locked and held inside the firing circle the whole time. It also occurred several times in a row over water.
-
It should not be hard to make a 'plane collision' box so that flying into a forest will blow you up, not not impede bullets or tanks.
Any engine that can't handle collision for certain units types only is sort of a joke.
-
I was surprised to see that where LOMAC had many areas of trees (outside detailed town zones), DCS just goes for the dark green textured look.
-
I suppose just about anything can go in this thread...
How do you guys set up your Vikhr attack runs? I struggle to take out more than one target at a time because the Su-25 is so fast.
What's your optimal speed and altitude for the approach, and with what combination of controls do you accomplish it?
-
I forgot about the gauges, mostly because they are only legible on high texture settings, unlike LOMAC.
-
Ironhand, I recently figured out how to read the HUD with that climbing arrow, like you said.
But it tends to disappear at inopportune moments. Is it only available in Nav mode or something?

I should first say that I am a near utter newb (except for my LOMAC days), so there could be something I'm missing here.
Here's the issue:
I am learning how to use autopilot, and often after I turn it off (either through toggling or the designated key) and the green lights on the panel go away, I start losing control of the plane.
Often, but not always, the plane begins forcibly rolling in one direction or the other, requiring constant, heavy opposite pressure on the ailerons to keep from flipping over and going into the ground. It needs all my trim to get the plane back to its pre-autopilot behavior, and is akin to the effect of firing a heavy Kh-29 from one wing only.
At other times, the post-autopilot hijacking involves me not being able to dive at all. My nose will only point up and up, requiring me to lower the throttle in order to descend.
What the heck is going on? No green lights mean that the autopilot if off, right?
-
Oh, that's even better. The readme is clearly not written by a native speaker, though.
I can't put the Sounds folder in the root folder of the game because there is already a Sounds folder. On the other hand, there is no obvious place for the contents of the patch folder to fit in.

I downloaded the training missions, but they instantly CTD my game.
I will just watch youtube videos rather than deal with that, but I want to delete the useless 2 gigs of training videos now. Where can I find them?
-
Laptops.
I am well aware of the advantages of 64 bit, but since DCS is the only game I have ever heard of to require 64 bit, alone amongst more hardware intensive, eyecandy-centric PC games, I do not enjoy being lectured about the future of gaming.
In any case, applying the tweak shown here has no effect: http://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=1084420&postcount=8

Among the questions left unanswered by the overwhelming 'lol, buy better computer' response:
Is it vital to install the game's version of Microsoft C++ even though it is older than what I currently have installed?
Which of the two versions in Nate IRL's sig should I install?
Do I have to roll back my DirectX to June 2010 even though I already have DirectX 2011? I am reluctant to go monkeying around with my computer's code based on a one-size-fits-all recommendation.

By which you mean, crashing instantly. Absolutely no extent of the game. Optimized for 64 bit shouldn't mean unable to run on 32 bit.Your operating system is holding you back from utilizing the full extent of the game. The suggested solution didn't work, and I have reinstalled multiple times.
The reason I remain skeptical is that none of the experienced posters explain the connection between RAM and the specific crash report, and I seem to be the only one who thinks that Eagle Dynamics' false advertizing regarding operating system is odd.
-
Can anyone show me where in the system reqs it says that 64 bit is required?
Because I find it hard to believe that this game is poorly coded enough to crash on empty map on low settings simply because less than 3GB of RAM is available in that instant. Surely someone can say something informed about the crash dump I posted.
-
That's not the culprit.
The one time I got the game to run, it was with default settings and highest possible (native) resolution. What do I have to do to convince you guys that's not just my hardware being weak? The game ran. There's a very clear crash dump pointing to a single file.

The CMD trick did not work. Is there anything else I should try?
New T-90 for DCS

That's why you don't usually here the pro-T90 people talking about RHA at all, other than invoking the the fast-improving abilities of Russian ERA (they claim it can stop sabot now).
The buzz around the T90 is more centered around the countermeasures that for some stupid reason the US doesn't have. Shtora, Arena successors, etc. It has a lot of superior technology on an aging platform.
