Viper -- what about the "2006 Lebanon War"?
-
I'm not questioning your source, but please show me this information. I'm astounded. (I'm not being sarcastic) What does it take to knock out the TIS equipment? What does it take to throw a track? Put a hole through the bottom or top? Damage the engine assembly and cooling? Show me your information because that's fascinating news to me. Very curious!

MBTs are actually pretty easily disabled and that the lack of kills is more a matter of how they are counted than a true representation of the damage the enemy can do. Yes, vanilla RPG-7 rounds from 20-30 years ago, many of them duds, and the rest the smaller 85mm types, will do very little. And it's still a good game regardless, let's avoid turning it into a review of the game. :) A Vikhr missile will do a lot more. AT-14s are supposed to be able to *kill* the most modern MBTs from the front, and they have a smaller warhead and a less advantageous attack angle than the Vikhr. In the game, a TOW missile will hit a T-80, even on the flank, and the T-80 will continue as normal. It seems to me that there is no compromise needed or extra damage modeling, just tell the game that if one of these hits, it's a kill.
-
I did some tests and found that even lower hull and side hits from Vikhr missiles would not always destroy the Abrams in the game. Even double salvo doesn't solve that. I'm quite sure that this is not accurate.
-
What do you guys think an AT-14 Kornet Missile would do to any modern tank hit on the front upper turret?

Eddie, Viper: What what??

Just ooc, if Russia entered a war that would last a year or more, what would their main production attack helicopter be?
-
Range, All weather.

Whether the AI's spotting ability needs to be tweaked or not I leave for others to discuss. But I will say that they have a kind of awareness which would be considered psychic if they were real :) It's not realistic, but it might be necessary. Casual observation indicates that the game is programmed to spot targets instantly at a given range, but to consider other variables before engaging. So they are always "ready to get you", but they won't act until conditions are right. The player on the other hand, is not always ready and doesn't simply spot everything within a given range. Labels will give you that ability, but then that's cheating too.

By the book and outside detection, still tagged... :(

Awesome post Viper. Has there been much discussion on helicopter tactics in the past on these forums? What weapon was the Hind firing there? Would you happen to have some tracks of your methods? -
Apart from the size, there is no reason why it couldn't be. Might need a guidance pod to go with it.

How to get central trimming on a Force Feedback stick

That did what I wanted thanks! -
How to get central trimming on a Force Feedback stick
adam12 replied to adam12's topic in Bugs and Problems
The FFB method in KA-50 is that when you press the trim button, the joystick forces hold the *joystick* in position for you, be that forward or after, left or right. The cyclic in the game is directly slaved to the joystick and your joystick centre is also cyclic centre. The no FF method is that the centre position of the *joystick* is set to hold the cyclic in the position at the time of trim. -
I want to tell BS to use the normal, non force feedback trimming method, where it resets the centre position of the joystick to match where the flight stick (in the game) is set. How do I tell BS that my joystick is not a FF joystick?
-
Wow, that is about as close to being a bird as I've ever seen. This is really amazing :) Now I know what to ask for from Santa. :):) I'd try hang gliding but it really scares the crap out of me.
-
Yeah I've tried it with and without the profiler, and actually the profiler helps in my case. The forces were very weak without it. And in every case it's always the same problem, it's only a matter of degree. Basically, the stick is crap. I must have a faulty model, but I've come across numerous complaints on the web about the F3D along the same lines. I have to find a way to tell the game it's not a FF stick and use the centre trim method.
-
Video looks fine. Thanks. This is what I wish my stick would do, but the forces are too weak and it tends to want to come back into the central position. I still have to fight the stick to stay in position. Also there is no question of taking my hand off the stick. As soon as I let go, even if I have it trimmed and stable with my hand on it, the stick drifts to a different position and the helo goes nuts. I think the FF may be disabling itself when the heat from my hand is gone. I think the F3D stick is just a hunk of crap.

LF = Lazy man's Laminar Flow I know what you mean regarding the camera and the visuals, I just wish I could feel the air in my face too :) Totally open cockpit is the best, but then you always need an engine :(
-
I tried this and found that the force settings were now too low to work even the little bit they worked before. Also I think the mapping settings are probably going to be different for each stick, but they are close to what I've been using.
-
Looks like a lot of fun. I wish there was a way to get rid of the canopy without ruining the LF.

After many hours spent on the thing, I'm pretty sure that aside from my ignorance of the trim mechanics of helicopters, a big part of the problem was that the Logitech Force3D stick I use has no force feedback in the middle. Unless I am trimming the joystick quite drastically in one direction the stick is too close to centre to get FF. I'm going to experiment with changing the saturation, so large joystick movements will produce small ones in-game. If that doesn't work I'll either find a way to disable FF entirely so the sim thinks I'm using a normal flight stick, or, I'll live with it/get a new joystick. This information is posted mostly for others coming after me experiencing the same issues but I'm still going to check the thread for comments for a couple weeks.

Watched your tracks, thanks. I don't see any frag-kills from the HE. Each kill comes from a direct hit. Is that correct? Very surprising! I had no idea they could mission-kill a Bradley in the sim. What level of damage are they supposed to be doing? Do they have to knock out the optics and/or the cannon on the Bradley before it will show a death animation? The first time you said Minimum Safe Distance I thought you meant to avoid frag or something along those lines. I didn't realize you meant vs. return fire from the targets. I can see now why the AP didn't do much against the Bradley for example. No questions on AP. On armor - how many zones does a vehicle have in the sim? I assume 3 horizontal (front/sides/rear) and then the vertical (roof)?
-
If you're careful and there aren't too many of them, you don't even need any flares :)
-
To add: It looks like this works by pitching up the helicopter when you loose altitude and down when you gain it. Does the altitude hold go through the engine controls or collective pitch at all?
-
Right - that's what it is! Stick usually comes last in the series of events (even hydraulic or electrical feedback comes from the control surface right?) but here it comes first. So in a way the KA-50 trim system works is like putting "The Club" on the cyclic? :D Which planes btw? That's interesting
