Have you played the Deployment campaign? The ground units definitely shoot at and kill one another. I've only played a few missions into the GOW campaign, but so far everybody on the ground is too spaced out to really engage. Well, except for artty and MLRS which is always wizzing about.

Pulling hair with the trim system
Jaximus Decimus replied to adam12's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
I use the Logitech G940, which is force feedback, and it works pretty much the same way for me except I don't have to re-center the stick. I just point the Shark where I want it to go, press and release the trim button and everything gets locked down right where it is. I believe I've read that holding down the trim button as you position the stick will keep the autopilot from wrestling you for control of the helicopter, but I pretty much exclusive use Flight Director, so I never have that problem anyway. -
First mission flown 50% completion?!
Jaximus Decimus replied to WildBillKelsoe's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
I just flew the whole mission with Flight Director on. That seamed to make it a lot easier to follow his serpentine path through the mountains. -
Well, if it's HEI it would have a thin to medium shell made of a hard metal alloy. Aluminum doesn't fragment very well and its light weight wouldn't give the individual pieces of shrapnel very much killing power past a few meters. An ideal fragmenting shell is going to be made from a medium density metal that is very hard. It should still pretty much splatter against armor.

First mission flown 50% completion?!
Jaximus Decimus replied to WildBillKelsoe's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
I had this same thing happen to me the first time I flew the mission. Hit every waypoint right on, 45 minute flight, land, 50% complete. Next time around I stuck to my flight lead like glue, straying way off in every direction right with him. When we got close to the base I got the mission complete queue, he told me to contact the tower for landing permission and that was that. 100%. I believe the key to passing this mission is to just stay right with your flight lead and be prepared to hear him talk about land marks for 45 minutes. BTW, you sure are fidgety in your cockpit. :>) -
Night Vision and button alignment prob?
Jaximus Decimus replied to Kurtz's topic in Bugs and Problems
I just had this problem mere moments ago when flying the first night mission in the deployment campaign. It's definitely caused by running multiple monitors. I switched back to single screen and everything worked perfectly. I don't run any mods. -

I know. It's not easy being so awesome, but somebody's gotta do it. :smilewink: -

dcsblackshark/blackshark/data/scripts/logbook/players.lua Back up this file after every successful mission complete. Restore it if you get killed. -
Watch the dev video on the countermeasures dispenser. When cycling through dispense intervals 5 might mean five seconds, but 6 actually means 1/10 of a second. I don't remember exactly which numbers are special like that, but I'm pretty sure Number of Sequences, Interval and Quantity all have special numbers. Using those modifiers you could probably pop all your flares from both pods in just a couple seconds.

Ok, Peter, I've been trying to figure this out for the last two hours, and it's just not happening, buddy. I clicked the link for the newest 32 bit x86 version, which downloaded a folder onto my computer. Inside this folder is a file named "d3d9.dll" I placed this file in my DCSBlackshark/bin folder. It's my understanding from the readme that when I launch Black Shark I'm supposed to get some sort of message about configuring my setup. I get no message at all. When I try to actually launch a mission the game sends me straight to the debriefing screen after taking me to my desktop for a few seconds. I have two 1920X1080 monitors running in extended desktop, Windows 7. All I want is to have my camera view on monitor one and my Shykval on monitor two. I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing. I've been reading through all these posts and I see all these .lua files and everything, but I don't even know where to put those files, let alone how to start tweaking them myself. Any assistance you could render would be greatly appreciated. Edited to add: Running Black Shark 1.0.2/Full Screen. Game runs normally if I delete d3d9.dll from the bin. No Softh files are generated anywhere on my PC.

Where is the "Cage" Command
Jaximus Decimus replied to StutteringHokum's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
Oh, sorry, bud. I didn't realize the defaults were FUBAR. The command is "Button Targeting mode reset" The command list is in alphabetical order if you go to "All Commands" in the dropdown menu. -

Backspace, broseph. -
RCS = Radar Cross Section NOE = Nap of The Earth, 20 ft. AGL or above tallest terrain feature. That's a doctrinal thing, though. Edit: Missed it by THAT much...

I can definitely see a few good hits with HEI playing hell with an armored vehicle, busting up external optics and sensors, but I just don't think you could "kill" anything more than an armored HMMWV with HEI. At least, not without getting a substantial amount of hits to the weakest parts of the armor.

Well, I never said I was a sales rep for DHB and everyone should run out and buy an Interceptor from K-Mart. Although, saying the vests don't work is ill informed. I've watched Interceptor vests take multiple hits of 7.62X39 at near point-blank range and stop every bullet. The vests do pretty much exactly what they were designed to do. The main problems are A) The vests weren't designed to protect from threats to the side of the wearer, B) The trauma plates don't cover all vital areas, and C) Body armor is still in short supply. Still to this day, not everyone that needs armor has it. Let's say you did get issued armor and you chipped one of your trauma plates. Well, good luck getting a new one when there aren't enough to go around in the first place. So, you end up going on patrol with a chipped trauma plate that will probably shatter after the first round it takes. You can't blame that on the vest or the plate. That's a logistics/supply problem. And good luck getting the military to switch to more durable armor like Dragon Skin. Anyway, back on topic. Yes, if you are able to accelerate a sufficient mass at sufficient velocity it will be able to smash through armor regardless of composition. What I'm saying is that, given similar mass and velocity, the bullet with the better composition with perform better against armor. I mean, I'm sure I could kill a tank by flying the space shuttle into it, but a shape charge warhead is just a lot more practical. Composition beats mass.

Well, an AP 5.56 NATO round is going to be more effective at penetrating armor than an FMJ 7.62. This is again do to bullet composition. Of course, an AP 7.62 NATO will fare better than an AP 5.56 because if its increased mass. My point being that bullet composition is still more important than mass. Neither AP round will penetrate a modern armored vehicle, though. In fact, the U.S military's Interceptor vests are rated to stop 7.62AP with the ceramic or composite plate inserted. AP will give you better performance against light vehicles and structures, though.

Penetrating armor is more about bullet composition than mass. Unless a round is designed with a penetrator it's just not going to want to go through armor, no matter how close or far you fire it. That's why you can't find penetration info on this HEI round. I actually looked for quite a while earlier and couldn't turn up anything. What does change a lot between a 20mm and a 30mm projectile is internal volume. That much more explosives in the round could make a difference in penetrating armor at long range. Personally, I don't have any experience with this in anything larger than a .50 BMG.

It also helps that they can make a helicopter that's doing 30 knots look like it's going a hundred miles an hour.

We were on a different page. I was replying to Bee_Sting saying the A-10 kills tanks so well because all the rounds hit in the same spot.
-
Ha, Viper, that's awesome, man. If you've ever seen an A-10 engage a tank you'll know that the rounds don't all hit in the same spot. The tank literally gets peppered from stem to stern. According to wikipedia the accuracy of the gun is 5 mils. It was my belief that the GAU-8 gets its tank killing power from the special depleted uranium rounds that it fires.

Replay Track Inconsistencies
Jaximus Decimus replied to Jaximus Decimus's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
Thanks for all the replies, gentlemen. Yes, I did indeed fast-forward the replay as I knew it should have been around one and a half hours long. And I was fast forwarding when my Shark deciding to commit seppuku on me. StarHopper and Yurgon, thank you both for checking out the track. I guess when StarHopper was watching it glitched much sooner than mine. The first 20 or 30 minutes I played I had a lot of trouble with ring vortex, but I had a good feel for how to get out of it before I took on that mission. Thanks for all the help. I guess I'll just let the track play out at normal speed so I can find out just what happened. -
Replay Track Inconsistencies
Jaximus Decimus replied to Jaximus Decimus's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
As this is my first sim, and I'm about 3 hours into it, I don't usually go much faster than 180 KPH. For me, flying like a bat out of hell is probably 200 or 210KPH. I have gotten the do not exceed alarm a few times though, so I know what that sounds like and I for sure wasn't getting it before my little episode. I've been using crappy desktop speakers instead of my headphones and SAM's make zero noise when they hit me, so I'm thinking I just got swatted down by MANPADS. Guess I'll never know. Thanks for your quick responses, guys. Ha, just read your small print, Viper. I was like, "PIBI....... what?" -
Hey, guys, new here to the forums. I just picked up Black Shark at the end of last week and I've only got a few hours of flight time, so I don't really know my way around the game, but this still seems messed up: Towards the end of my first mission I'm looking down at my Shkval display and I spot some guys with MANPADS. Before I can take action a dude launches a SAM at me, I pull a split-S, bounce off the ground wrecking my Shkval and some other systems, and start to fly out of there like a bat out of hell. A couple clicks out I pretty much just drop out of the sky like a sack of batteries. So I'm thinking, "Why the freak did that happen.?" I go back to watch the replay to see what was up, only in the replay I just crash into the side of a damn mountain way before I ever got engaged by MANPADS and all that. So, what's the deal here? Is this a glitch? And I guess what I really want to know is, if I go back and re-watch the replay, is there a chance it might work right the second time, or am I just boned? Thanks for your help, guys. Here's the track if anyone is interested. WTF!.trk
