Well, I was talking about my experience on the module man, I own it from the first day, and I know that GCI is very important, but I was talking about DCS.
In DCS you use the 21 as an ambusher, if you use BVR, you are dead, if you dogfight you are dead (Unless you are Hadwell).
The Mig used his radar after being guided to the enemy planes, and his radar is made to only attack not for "scan" , is just an "scope" like in a rifle, an the missiles are not for BVR, according to some sources, BVR is for more than 37km, the radar of the Mig only gets good locks at 25 max.
So the R3R are just another kind of missile that is guided for radar instead of IR R3S, but his role is not BVR, is just a normal or "extended" Ir missile, if I can remeber correctly, it comes from reverse engineering from an Aim-9
