Trying to get a feel for the russian jets after mastering the F-15 . Where is the time to active for the R-77? Boy, you really get a sense of how crappy the sidewinder is compared to the IR russian missiles. Even the amraam seems ineffective, but not as bad as the sidewinder, when comparing with the russian missiles. Also, is there a picture like the one below for russian radar? If the pic doesn't show, it's in this link from TekaTeka. http://forum.lockon.ru/showthread.php?t=25795&highlight=tmdgm

Even sparrows? I do this for amraams and sidewinders if I have enough, but sparrows seems to be a waste to fire more than 1 since it relies on my radar. Once that lock on box starts flashing, then disappears, you can have 10 sparrows headed there, they will all miss. I think? I can have the nose pointed right at him and his countermeasures and maneuvering will lose lock.

Yes, too perfect. And very annoying. I die 70%. I know there are tons of topics about ecm blinking, but a quick summary, what is it? I'm assuming you turn off and on ecm to break lock?
-
Does the AI do ECM blinking? I'm thinking against AI just keep it default at wide view.

Thanks for your help. One last question is adjusting azimuth in TWS. Isn't the default azimuth the widest scan you can have?. So unless you want faster updates, just keep it default? If I do decide to narrow the azimuth, then I definitely have to adjust in TWS. But if I never narrow it, shouldn't have to adjust in TWS unless I want faster updates. Where's that manual again. Thanks again.

How do you see missiles without icons?
tmdgm replied to tmdgm's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
Thanks GG, that really helps. So do vertical snakes as you put it, look for contrails, need to figure out a rough time to impact for certain distances and then the final maneuver. That seems to still be the key, estimating when that final maneuver is or should be. I get the launch notice, do the vertical up and downs abeam of the missile, then the final barrel roll. But it's still trying to figure out when that is. You summed it up on "what I think is the last moment". That's where I'm struggling. Don't drop below 350 before the final maneuver is a good piece of advice. On the responding to wingman as too late, that was a radar understanding issue. I understand now and shouldn't happen again. -
Ok, could you elaborate a little on the during a tws bug? What bug? TWS is initially not a lock, but then you lock on to multiple targets, well sort of because locking in tws doesn't give a launch indication... right? So if I'm in TWS, whether I lock or not, I should be trying to adjust azimuth? Especially if I'm firing sparrows, or even amraams until time to active TAA?

Oh, ok. I get it. I wasn't aware the scan altitude was at the point of the TDC cursor. I must have missed that in that manual. That was a really good drawing TekaTeka. I was keeping my TD cursor way up at the top of the HDD. With it being that far out at 80, or even 40, a low scan altitude of 0 is still a fairly narrow cone and could easily miss planes low on the deck. I probably saw them as a jamming strobe, but when they got close enough to burn through, they were outside (or below) of my cone. That really helped. Thanks again. Another question, does reducing the azimuth (that's the vertical scan right?) to a narrow band help you maintain radar lock better when he is maneuvering and dumping countermeasures? I'm sure it will help you detect better. It would be when I'm firing a sparrow. I think I asked this before and the answer was no, the narrow range won't help you maintain lock any better than the wider azimuth. Although, once you're locked, does the vertical azimuth matter? Hmm. I need to jump in the cockpit again.

Just to check, keeping the target within the illumination cone is basically keeping it within the 60 degree cone? You're not referring to doing anything specific with the radar controls? Narrowing gimbal limits/range etc? I usually just try to keep the gimbal limits as wide open as possible.

Sorry for all the questions, just trying to figure this thing out. Actually 2 questions: 1) In and F-15, Is it better to fly low or high? It seems like when I fly low, the range of my missiles is less, but if I fly high, my missiles seem to miss more often (this assumes targets on the deck). Or close to the deck. I understand the ground clutter thing, but wasn't sure what others do. If I know the bandits are on the deck, I go as low as possible and survive. If I go high, missiles seem to miss more often, I get too close and I die. The stock scramble mission where you are against Su-34's is a great example. 2) Does the radar strength or cone (can't think of the word) reduce against targets close to the ground when you go from 20 to 40, 80 etc? I ask because I was flying an addon mission and I was trying with icons off. I had the radar at 40 and 80 nm, with the radar altitude adjuster always kept the bottom range at 0 because I was worried about low level strike aircraft. This is on the head's down display on the left. Adjusts with SHIFT+. and SHIFT+; There was alot of jamming contacts with RWR showing Mig's straight ahead but still a way's out. Welp, next thing I knew, wingmen break and announce missile launch. Oh cra...boom. Played it again same way at 40 or 80 on the radar but turned icons on. There were 2 SU-25T's on the deck in front of the migs, which is what got me last time. But still nothing on the radar other than the ecm jammings. I was also low, but not on the deck. I turned icons on too late and two R-73's toasted me. I should've been close enough to burn through the Su-25t's ecm at this point, but nothing on the radar. So again played, but couldn't figure out why radar didn't pick it up. I tried toggling down to 20 nm and narrowed the altitude range on the left of the HDD (but always was bottomed at 0). And voila, they showed up at ~10-15 nm and I was able to lock and avoid any R-73's coming my way. I ended up dying later, which is typical, but it seemed the only way to detect them on radar was to go to 20 on the range.

I thought I remember reading in the manual that only Mig29S and F-15 have onboard ECM. But when I'm in the Su-27 (no external pods), I push the ECM button and there's a light that goes on in the cockpit.

How do you see missiles without icons?

Is there a chart (cheat sheet) available for timing of missiles? That would be useful. If not, maybe I'll try to make one up. Vertical snake? Is that doing a weave going vertical? Going down I'm assuming. Also, I'll try that with Aim 54 and see how that goes. I also have 19" monitor. But sounds like these things are small to see anyway. So bandit is 10-15 nm. I fire an amraam and get a missile warning. I'm sure maneuvers are different every time, but what typically do you do? I've been watching all those training videos and say to F-pole and pull up at the last second. That works against amraams or with icons. Doesn't work on SARH without icons. Sounds like you don't just F-pole, that you are doing maneuvering the whole time? Short range, I'm just maneuvering any which way I can, usually lots of elevator back pressure and split S type maneuvers. Trouble here is knowing when a launch happens. Sometimes I get missile launch warnings from wingmen. Thanks for the help. I'm getting better, slowly. -

Ok, I must have spent too much time in WW2 sims. How do you estimate, or force the missile to show a contrail? Also, this is great for BVR, but I would've thought I could see the missiles fairly clearly at short/med range. -

That video helps, but it's only good against ARH's. You know when to break. If it's SARH, you don't know when to break without icons. -

Um, why is it good to run and hide in the 29? Also, how can you turn away if you are firing sparrows and R-27R's? So Su 27 and 15 should be high and fast to maximize range? Missile range? I think I'm ok in BVR cuz you get the missile launch warning. Except you can't do the F-pole thing and pull up and barrel roll (unless you are fighting against an amraam). It's the med and short range that kills me. -

tmdgm replied to tmdgm's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
Thanks, I'll give it a try, but this is tough probably isn't a good enough word. right now it's impossible. Even if I can survive 1 out of 10 would be nice. I just can't see squat, don't know when to break and barrel roll. Long range, short range, both are impossible. I'll keep trying, but getting wasted every single time gets old quick. It's usually, where is it, where is it, where is it, there it ...boom. -
How long does an amraam rely on F-15 radar?
tmdgm replied to tmdgm's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
Thanks for the info. How does it work if you multiple launch in TWS, meaning fire an amraam at primary and then secondary? -

tmdgm replied to tmdgm's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
Thanks, I'll have to look for that. You mean on the radar where you lock for BVR? -
When you fire an amraam, is there any way to tell when an amraam acquires on it's own radar?
-
Yeah, AI planes seem to lose radar break fairly often. Doesn't seem to be worth ripple firing cuz it's a good chance he will break lock. If he doesn't break lock, then 1 missile usually does the job.

Shoot, I can't even see the short range sidewinders and R-27ET's. I like the padlock missile idea. At least that's something that could help. Wow, 1 year to get used to it. I can see me using icons for just a while more. I can barely survive with icons on, it's 100% guaranteed to die with icons off. -
I've been trying to play this game without icons, and I can't see a missile until the split second before it hits. Even when it's a radar missile, I get the RWR alert, I still can't see it until the split second before it hits. Even the R-27's and sparrows that have the smoke trail. I'm having the same problems with the WOE series, but there's no icons so I'm forced to guess in that one.
-
Since the SARH's like sparrows get the info from the base plane, is it worth ripple firing them because once the base plane loses lock, you lose both missiles? At least for an amraam, there's hope for the second missile.

At least that's the rumor anyway. There is a forum at the history channel which has several people indicating the show has been canceled. http://boards.historychannel.com/forum.jspa?forumID=800000053 Nobody knows if they'll finish up season 2 or when will be the last show or if it's even true. People have contacted the history channel and the official response has been they have no plans to cancel the show. However there are some good sources (people who work with the animators) who have indicated it is true. I hate starting/spreading rumors (this one is worth spreading even if it's wrong), but if anyone is interested in the show, contact history channel via the email below to express interest in the show. Maybe there's a chance the high up execs will reconsider. If it's not canceled, maybe they'll be motivated for a season 3 with all the support. thc.viewerrelations@aetv.com

Thanks for the response. Wow, I thought the stock model looks pretty good. Actually, I think LOMAC is one of the best, probably the best looking flight sims (looks around nervously for snipers).
