Place the Main Menu on a Monitor of choice?
buedi replied to buedi's topic in DCS World 1.x (read only)
Thanks! Now that I am in your originial Thread, there I can download the attached files (also the Rapidshare ones of course). Weird  I will try this now, since I was not able to get the Full Screen Menu running on my right Screen yet. Let´s see if it does what it should on my side :) Edit: That´s interesting. With your "MissionEditor.lua" I get the Main Menu windowed and can move it around. Now I think I get the idea: The Monitor Setup LUAs They only change the viewports of the executable which runs the Sim and the Multiplayer Screen. The MissionEditor.lua You have to edit this one to change the Main Menu, Mission Editor, Campaign Editor, Options and Enzyclopedia Screens to your needs. To achieve what I want in my Monitor Setup I always need to modify a Monitor Setup LUA file and the MissionEditor.lua (in case it gets overwritten in the next Update). It´s a bit confusing, since the MissionEditor.lua has affect on more than just the "Mission Editor" :-) -
Place the Main Menu on a Monitor of choice?
buedi replied to buedi's topic in DCS World 1.x (read only)
First, thanks for your responses! @Kuky: I tried that. And although everything else I do in the LUA seems to work and places the Windows / MFCDs etc. in the right spot, the UIMainView = Viewports.Center or UIMainView = GUI (if I define an area named GUI) does not have any effect. DCS always displays the Main Menu full screen on my left Display. I also tried the Easy Monitor Configurator. It places everythign where I want to, but also for a LUA file generated by this tool, the Main Menu is always placed on the left screen :( I´ll strip down the LUA a bit, because it also contains the Exports for MFCDs, SHKVAL etc to make it more readable. This is how it looks for example: _ = function(p) return p; end; name = _('Testing'); Description = 'Testing' Viewports = { Center = { x = 1280; y = 0; width = 1920; height = 1080; viewDx = 0; viewDy = 0; aspect = 1.77777777777778; } } GUI = { x = 1280; y = 0; width = 1920; height = 1080; } UIMainView = GUI I also tried to leave out the GUI block and set UIMainView to Viewports.Center, because this Viewport is rendering the Simulation Window perfectly on my right screen. But to no avail. @Quirkitized: When I click on your attachments, the forum tells me that these are invalid and I should contact an Administrator. Does it take a while after an attachment is uploaded until it is available to others? -
I´m running a dual Monitor Setup here, placing some displays (SHKVAL, MFCDs etc.) on a 2nd Monitor. The 2nd one is on the left of my Main monitor. As you may be aware, because DCS does not allow negative coordinates to place Windows, I had to make the left one Monitor #1 (in Windows) and my "Main Screen" Monitor #2. That´s not a big deal while in the Sim, because I can place the DCS Simulation Window on my Monitor #2 and the exported Displays on my left Monitor #1. The problem I have is, that the Main Menu in DCS is always displayed on the left screen and is obstructed by the Cougar MFDs I put on it. I would like to have the Main Menu also on my "Main Monitor". Is there some kind of tweaking in a LUA file possible to do this? This would make it much more comfortable. Currently, when I want to edit a Mission I have to reconfigure DCS to get the Main menu on my "Main Monitor" and reconfigure it again when I want to do some flying.

How to prevent the Forum to be set to "Read"?
buedi replied to buedi's topic in Forum and Site Issues
Thanks for your response. I think I also will have to use the New Posts functionality. Today I had the impression that I did not have the problem, but I was not that long on the Forum. But maybe they changed something. I´ll keep an eye on that :) -
Most of the time I come here once a week on during the weekend to read through the new posts. When I open the Forum, unread Forum parts and posts are marked as unread, which is a good thing. The problem is when I start reading topics and come back to the Main Forum again a few minutes later, everything is set to read automatically. I don´t have this issue in other Forums. There I have to either click on each unread topic or I need to click on "Mark everything Read" to set everything to read. The behaviour makes it difficult to read the forums if you´re just out to everything you did not read let´s say a week before. I checked my Forums settings in the User CP, but I was not able to find a function which disables the "set the forum to read automatically after x minutes". Does someone know how to solve this or is it just how this forum works and there will be no change? :helpsmilie:

Now that you mention the X=0 y=0 issue I remember that I´ve stumbled upon this a long time ago somewhere in this forum. That makes sense and thank you very much for reminding me. I´ll set it as the right monitor now, so the MFCDs can be placed on my "physical" lef monitor. It makes using the map in DCS World a bit strange, but you should sit in the plane anyway all the time :pilotfly:

I have a strange problem here. I am running DCS World 1.2.3 and EMC 2.0. For testing purposes I connected a 2nd Screen to my PC and since it was on the right of me on the floor I configured it as my "right" Screen also in Windows. I was able to drag Programs to the right side, which then appeared on the right Monitor. This also worked flawless with EMC. I export a MFCD, drag it to the right to the right monitor and that´s it. So good so far. Now that I really want to use it, I layed the cables and put the Screen on my Desk, on the LEFT side of my Main monitor. Again I made the change in Windows, so it is configured as my left monitor. I can drag programs to the left side, which appear on the left monitor. But: In EMC, it does not let me drag the MFCD to the left monitor. I cannot cross the "monitor border" with EMC. It´s even more weird, because if I drag a MFCD as far left as I can (to the border of the Main monitor) and I then resize the MFCD to make it bigger, it appears on the left screen. Now I thought, that I have a small piece of the MFCD on the left screen I can grab it there and pull it fully over, but when I click on it it just snaps back to the Main monitor. Is someone having his 2nd screen on the left side and having the same problem? Does somebody know if EMC stores some Configuration in the registry maybe which I need to reset? I was not able to find any EMC config files on the HDD (apart from the LUA files it generates in the DCS folder). And yes, I also created a brand new LUA file within EMC, still the same problem :(

Training missions failing to continue.
buedi replied to Stealthbird97's topic in Mission and Campaigns
I had the same problem. Most of the time when you are instructed to do a specific turn in 9 out of 10 ways the instructor is just not recognizing that you did it. Sometimes I fly a 360 until he recognizes that I did the turn. Sometimes when I RTB because of frustration the instructor kicks in again, although i am flying a complete different heading (because of RTB) than he instructed me to do so. I stopped using the training missions and am using Youtube Videos and do Online flying + reading the Manual. It´s frustrating, but now maybe I know why the A-10 is the only DCS module which does have these Training missions and the others just have Videos. Because Videos just work  -
Which is a good sign. I feared that people start hunting for the "freebies" like vultures. But they are not and this is a sign for a fantastic community over here. And that you give away these expensive stuff is amazing and very generous. If people don´t ask for that stuff it´s not because they don´t appreciate your generosity, but maybe they think they don´t really need it because they could afford it on their own. I won´t apply for anything too, because I only recently bought me some pre-Christmas presents which made me aware again how lucky I am :)

One (last?) remark from me: When you go the DCS route and want to purchase an AddOn I personally would prefer the A-10C Module. Unfortunately the Tutorials have some bugs, but most of the basic ones work pretty well. These are not just Videos, but you are put into a Cockpit where you can do everything which the narrator tells you to do. 2 or 3 times through the Startup Tutorial and you know how it works. 3 times looking a Video does not do the same to me at least. The other DCS modules do not seem to have these kind of Tutorials, they are just Videos.

I´m probably late to this, but I wanted to add my thoughts too. Of course I don´t know the OPs dad, so I can´t tell if he will like blowing things up and learning what all these Buttons will do in the plane or on his Keyboard. Even with a HOTAS with a lot of buttons and stuff, it might be very frustrating to learn all this stuff. DCS might be something he could get a hang on later. But I would prefer something else if I was retired. What about Microsoft Flight Simulator X? I can´t think of anything better to get started with Flight Simulators. You can basically install it, sit in a plane and fly around without knowing too much. Within FSX there are fantastic, narrated Tutorials which teach you the basics of flying. Also the in built Help system is fantastic. There you can learn everything about planes you need to know in FSX. What a HSI is, how it works, how the GPS system works, what Nav Aids are and how you use the Radios etc. With FSX (Gold, which includes the Accelleration Pack) he has the whole world and a whole bunch of different Airplanes to fly with. And these fantastic Tutorials and Documentation built in the game. He can explore the whole world if he wants. And depending on where he lives, you might spice up his Simulator a little bit with one of the Ultimate Terrain X series AddOns or even one of the ORBX sceneries. This way he can take of from an Airport near his home and when he´s up on the air everything will look very familiar. On sites like AVSim you get thousands of AddOns (Airfields, Airplanes...) and the AddOn market is huge. To get started with FSX a simple Stick with a built in Throttle like a Saitek Evo Force will do. FSX is cheap too and compared to what it offers it´s a steal. If he really gets involved in Flight Simming, you can make him some presents over the next years. A better Stick, Throttle system, some Addons or maybe even one of the DCS series.
